Derby County
Quote:
Billy Davies has signed a contract extension to stay as Derby County manager until 2010.
The Scot took charge at Pride Park last summer after leaving Preston North End, and guided the club to promotion to the Premier League.
The play-off win over West Brom ended Derby's five-year exile from the top flight and Davies has been rewarded with a new deal.
After that game he had admitted he could not guarantee he would stay at the helm, but those fears have now been banished.
Derby started the new Premier League season with an encouraging 2-2 draw at home to Portsmouth on Saturday, with Andy Todd heading home a late equaliser.
Davies, who had to watch that match from the stands due to a touchline ban, takes his team to Manchester City on Wednesday.

Benny Feilhaber has been cleared to make his Derby County debut. Derby agreed a three-year contract to sign Feilhaber in a £1million deal from Hamburg.
Meanwhile, reports claim Davies has also lined up a deal to sign Lewis from Leeds United.

Rams plan Vassell move
Quote:
Skysports.com understands Derby are lining up a move for Manchester City's Darius Vassell.
Rams boss Billy Davies is actively scouring the transfer market for reinforcements and he has made a new striker one of his top priorities.
Davies is now believed to be considering a move for former Aston Villa ace Vassell.
Vassell's future at Manchester City has been the subject of speculation all summer with the club having rejected a bid from Besiktas last month.
City chief Sven Goran Eriksson is believed to be willing to listen to offers for the England international having brought in the likes of Rolando Bianchi and Valeri Bojinov this summer.
Davies is keen to bolster his forward line as he looks to find an experienced Premier League performer to add to his attacking options and he could offer Vassell the chance to make the move to Pride Park.

Derby County's move for PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mika Vayrynen has stalled.
"The situation is that the financial people are negotiating but, unfortunately, one or two people are moving the goalposts around and changing certain situations," said Rams boss Billy Davies.

Penalty agony for Rams
Quote:
Blackpool added to Derby's woes with a dramatic 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory at Pride Park.
Blackpool skipper Michael Jackson scored the decisive penalty to earn the Championship side a place in the Carling Cup third round. Jackson kept his cool, sending Stephen Bywater the wrong way after County captain Darren Moore had dragged the previous penalty wide.
The second round tie had finished 2-2 after extra-time when Kaspars Gorkss' last-gasp header forced penalties. Shaun Barker crossed from the right wing and there was Gorkss to head past Bywater at the far post.
Winning goal
Craig Fagan looked like he had headed the winning goal in the 101st-minute. Fagan met Gary Teale's right-wing cross at the far post with a downwards header from eight yards out. Blackpool forced the game into extra-time when Gorkss' headed home an equaliser in the 86th-minute.
The Latvian left-back looped Keigan Parker's cross back across goal and into the far corner after Mo Camara had given the Rams a 62nd-minute lead with his first goal for the club. Camara picked the ball up on the right wing and curled a low cross-cum-shot through a crowded penalty box and the ball nestled in the far bottom corner.

Derby make offer for Celtic striker Miller
Quote:
Derby County have tabled a £2.5 million bid for Celtic striker Kenny Miller.
The Independent says Billy Davies has pursued Portsmouth's David Nugent, Kenwyne Jones of Southampton and Jon Stead of Sheffield United but Miller looks the most likely option for the Derby County manager. Miller, 27, played for Wolves for five years.

Portsmouth's Nugent close to Derby move
Quote:
David Nugent could complete a move to Derby County today.
The Sun says Nugent is sweating on a pay-off from Portsmouth which will allow him to make a £6m switch to Derby.
The Premier League new boys have agreed to pay Pompey what they forked out to Preston for Nugent in July.
The striker, 22, is desperate to link up with Rams boss Billy Davies again, who managed him at Deepdale. But Nugent wants to sort out some financial details before he moves.
