It's the next best thing for clubs that can't compete with the stronger clubs in their respected league. I lose respect for clubs that opt out of certain competitions. You lose creditability that way. But to each their own i guess.

Palermo will be looking for no less than the three points when they face relegation battlers Chievo at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in Week 24. The Flying Donkeys are desperate to get some away points and are unlikely to give it up without a fight.

The Rosanero were defeated 1-0 by Empoli last week, while Chievo couldn’t do much better against Inter. The Sicilians are still holding third place though with 42 points. The Gialloblu are slowly creeping up the table, but they are still in the relegation zone with 18 points. Last year’s tie was entertaining and ended 2-2, while in this season’s previous clash the Sicilians managed to win 1-0 in Verona.

President Maurizio Zamparini isn’t happy with how the team has been performing recently and claimed that the Champions League for the Rosanero is just a dream, adding that they have less than a 10 per cent chance of beating Chievo this week. After these comments, Coach Francesco Guidolin and his men will be eager to silence the fiery chief.

Guidolin is likely to line up a 4-3-2-1 formation, but he will have to do without former Sampdoria full-back Aimo Diana and the newly signed Uruguayan ace Edison Cavani. Tireless midfielder Roberto Guana should start, while up front Andrea Caracciolo will have another chance to show what he is worth. However, Polish striker Radoslaw Matiusak may sit on the bench ready to replace Caracciolo during the second half.

After opting for a 4-3-3 formation in recent matches, Chievo boss Luigi Del Neri may go for his preferred 4-4-2. Wing wizard Franco Semioli, who nearly signed for Palermo last summer, should play on the right flank. The attacking duo should be formed by Albanian bomber Erjon Bogdani and Nigerian ace Victor Obinna, who will probably be preferred to Sergio Pellissier. Chievo will be without Federico Cossato who isn’t available due to injury.

Man on fire: Andrea Caracciolo (Palermo) – It’s make or break time for the former Brescia striker. Guidolin’s patience won’t last much longer and the 26-year-old forward will have to show that he deserves a regular place.

True. That's why i love when significant players from each club take over high roles with their respected club. They know what it take to win and know what's best for the club.

1-0 Palermo. Goal from Di Michelle. Was some controversy as Di Michelle was in an offside position, but the ball came of a Chievo defender, so he was onside. nice hard shot in top of the net.

Caracciolo had a fantastic chance to score with his shot just wide in the remaining minutes of the game. Palermo see their CL spot disappearing week after week!

Ya, they have been slumping around Christmas time. They had a great start, but they never thought they would be Scudetto contenders. And with Amauri gone for the season, doesn't help either! Hopefully they can get a Uefa spot becasue a CL spot, seems almost out of the question.
