Vieri gets his first! Not looking good for Siena. The missed penalty by Corvia was massive!
Quote:
Serie A Week 35 - 6/5/07 (14.00 UK)
Atalanta 3 - 1 Siena
Ariatti 12 (A), Vergassola pen 47 (S), Vieri 65 (A), Carrozzieri 91 (A)
Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia
Christian Vieri scored his first goal in an Atalanta jersey - and it was worth the wait - but Siena slide into the bottom three.
Although the Orobici were promoted in the summer, they were the ones looking for a place in Europe from this match, while Siena struggled to stay in Serie A after three defeats from their last five. Cristiano Doni is out for the season after a hernia operation and the visitors had to do without Massimo Maccarone and the suspended Daniele Galloppa.
Siena got off to a blistering start with Leandro Rinaudo's header, a Mario Frick counter and deflected Daniele Portanova shot in the opening five minutes. Atalanta also threatened, with Alex Manninger parrying a Migliaccio rocket into the path of Ferreira Pinto, though the Brazilian was unable to make the most of this opportunity.
As so often happens this season, Siena do not take their chances and go behind. Atalanta stroked the ball around well and Luca Ariatti rose to nod in Rivalta's cross from six yards.
It was almost 2-0, Migliaccio's looping header thumping the crossbar with Manninger beaten.
The referee pointed to the spot when Morris Carrozzieri blocked Rinaudo's header with his arm and there were few doubts over this decision. Roma youth product Daniele Corvia stepped up, but his penalty thumped the base of the far upright. It's the third consecutive spot-kick Siena have missed this season.
Straight after the restart the Tuscans were awarded another penalty for Bellini's clumsy challenge on Alberto. This time Simone Vergassola took the kick and it went in off the underside of the crossbar, as they nearly managed to miss this one too.
Siena were riled up and soon after Brevi's header from a corner kick thumped the base of the upright.
Christian Vieri came on for Atalanta, as he has not yet been able to start a match after over a year on the sidelines. The veteran managed to score his first goal for the club and was the subject of wild celebrations from his teammates. Bobo picked up the ball from 40 metres away, immediately swung round for a stunning half-volley that dipped over goalkeeper Manninger, who was off his line. It was very similar to a strike that Sampdoria's Fabio Quagliarella scored a few weeks ago.
Alberto was sent off for a foul on Bombardini and ugly reaction and soon after Carrozzieri rose for a powerful header across the face of goal, securing Atalanta's points. Bertotto followed for dissent.
Atalanta: Calderoni; Rivalta, Talamonti, Carrozzieri, Bellini; Ferreira Pinto, Migliaccio, Donati, Ariatti (Abeijon 94); Tissone (Bombardini 87); Zampagna (Vieri 54)
Siena: Manninger; Bertotto, Portanova, Rinaudo (Gastaldello 55), Molinaro; Alberto, Brevi, Vergassola, Antonini (Chiesa 80); Frick, Corvia (Locatelli 46)
Ref: Rocchi
Missed penalty: Corvia 33 (S)
Sent off: Alberto 88 (S), Bertotto 88 (S)

THe most amazing goal by Vieri! The same type of goal like Quagliarella's against Chievo (i think) from 38 meters. Great way for Vieri to come back

Serie A: Udinese - Atalanta [13-05-07]
Quote:
Serie A Week 36 - 13/5/07 (14.00 UK)
Udinese - Atalanta
Stadio Friuli
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Udinese and Atalanta both seem to be fairly certain of a mid-table finish with only three matches remaining, but don’t expect either team to take things easy when they meet at the Stadio Friuli. European qualification is still a remote possibility for these two teams, but at least one of them is guaranteed to drop out of the race by the end of 90 minutes.
With Coach Alberto Malesani still fresh on the Zebrette bench, every player in the squad will know there could be big changes on the way this summer. Malesani will surely be looking to bring in some of his own players during the transfer market and the Bianconeri men will want to impress their boss in the final few games of the campaign. Udinese’s form has hit trouble after consecutive defeats to relegation candidates Catania and Cagliari, while their tough final fixtures against Milan and Palermo mean this will probably be many of the players’ best chance to prove their worth to the side.
A number of the Bianconeri’s lesser-used squad members look likely to have a chance to impress Malesani in this match too, thanks to Friuli outfit’s appalling disciplinary record. Four red cards in two weeks, plus an avalanche of cautions, means that the likes of Antonio Di Natale, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Aleksandar Lukovic, Andrea Coda and Giampiero Pinzi are all suspended. Add in the injuries to Damiano Zenoni, Felipe and Christian Obodo, and their team is likely to have an experimental look to it on Sunday. Tomas Sivok, Gaetano D’Agostino and Tomas Zapotocny should all feature, while Gyan Asamoah and Barreto are expected to start in attack.
Atalanta will be without influential defender Claudio Rivalta through suspension, while top scorer Cristiano Doni will miss out, along with youngster Marino Defendi, after undergoing surgery earlier this month. Argentine duo Leonardo Talamonti and Fernando Tissone should take their place for this game, while Riccardo Zampagna is expected to get the nod in the lone striker’s role ahead of Nicola Ventola and Christian Vieri.
The Orobici are the closer of the two sides to a place in Europe next season. Just five points behind Fiorentina and a place in the UEFA Cup, thanks to another Inter-Roma Coppa Italia Final freeing up an extra space, Nerazzurri Coach Stefano Colantuono will still see Europe as a target even if it is a distant one. While they have impressed in Bergamo, La Dea’s form on their travels will need to improve drastically if they are to have any chance of causing an upset in the race for Europe after failing to get on the scoresheet in their last two away trips to Empoli and Messina.
Man on fire: Sulley Ali Muntari (Udinese) – The Ghanaian international has covered for the absence of midfield partner Christian Obodo excellently in recent weeks and his eye for goal could be even more important with strikers Vincenzo Iaquinta and Antonio Di Natale both suspended for this game.
Last season: Not played
Form guide: Udinese (W W D L L) Atalanta (W L W D W)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Udinese (probable): De Sanctis; Zapotocny, Natali, Zapata; Motta, Sivok, D’Agostino, Muntari, Dossena; Asamoah, Barreto
Atalanta (probable): Calderoni; Adriano, Talamonti, Carrozzieri, Bellini; Ferreira Pinto, Migliaccio, Donati, Ariatti; Tissone; Zampagna

Atalanta may get the win here with all the big names out for Udinese. Both teams have nothing to play for. But i hope Udinese at least earns a draw.

Lucky him. I hate when players have to retake a penalty. But rules are rules i guess. Too bad they don't enforce the same rules when there is a free kick.
