Default Cup holders Nürnberg win

1. FC Nürnberg reached the next round of the DFB Cup easily.
FCN taught Victoria Hamburg a footballing lesson with a magnificent 6:0(3:0) romp.

At the Victoria-Stadion it was Robert Vittek who opened the scoring after eleven minutes in front of 6.093 fans. Zvjezdan Misimovic(35.) and Angelos Charisteas (45.) added further goals in the first half.

The second half was eleven minutes old when Vittek scored his second of the match. Charisteas scored again (58.) and Vittek (78.) picked up his third goal of the game.

Klewer had it easy

Nürnberg looked good a week before the start of the Bundesliga season and their game against promoted Karlsruher. They could and should have scored more goals after missing some decent chances.

FCN keeper Daniel Klewer will not have had many easier days at the office. Having got the nod ahead of Jaromir Blazek he had little to do.

Default Meyer wary of Karlsruhe

Hans Meyer has warned his Nurnberg team of the perils of facing newly promoted teams in the opening weeks of the Bundesliga season.

Nurnberg came out of the nowhere to win the DFB-Pokal and land a respectable sixth-placed finish in the Bundesliga last season, but Meyer is sure to keep his players' feet firmly on the ground.

Yet the new signings of Angelos Charisteas, Zvjezdan Misimovic, Jaromir Blazek and Peer Kluge have set the bar high, and Meyer has called for a successful start to the season with top-flight newcomers Karlsruhe their opening opponents.

"We are still not a top team," he told kicker magazine. "My expectations are more realistic.

"Of course it would be important to win the psychologically complicated openers against (newcomers) Karlsruhe and Rostock.

"But the start contains five or six matches. It would not be a catastrophe if we played Karlsruhe to a 1-1 draw."

Meyer also tried to take the pressure off Greece striker Charisteas, who faces sky-high expectations when he returns to the Bundesliga.

"I keep reading that Angelos is the most expensive addition in the club's history," the coach continued.

"That adds further weight to his shoulders."

Default Karlsruhe off to a flier

What a comeback! Promoted Karlsruher SC pulled off a sensational 2-0 win away to DFB Cup winners 1. FC Nürnberg on the opening day.

DFB Cup winners 1. FC Nürnberg have made a miserable start to the 2007/08 Bundesliga season.

Hajnal brace

Hans Meyer's team lost 2-0 against promoted Karlsruher SC. New signing Tamas Hajnal (44/74) got both goals for KSC on their return to the top flight after a nine-year absence.

Both head coaches had three new signings in their starting eleven. FCN fielded goalkeeper Jaromir Blazek, Angelos Charisteas and Zvjezdan Misimovic. KSC's Edmund Becker chose Christian Timm, Hajnal and Andreas Görlitz.

Vittek misses sitter

Nuremberg had the first good chance in front of 45,419 fans when Robert Vittek (8) rounded KSC keeper Markus Miller only to miss an empty net.

Karlsruhe had started carefully, but Hajnal had little to do in front of an empty two minutes before half-time after Michael Mutzel had hit the cross-bar.

Mintal unlucky

FCN stepped up the pressure when Meyer introduced strikers Marek Mintal and Joshua Kennedy. Mintal was denied twice by Miller before shooting just wide (67).

Hajnal was in the right place at the right time again when Blazek was unable to hold onto Sebastian Freis' cross from the right, sealing the win for KSC.

They say expect the unexpected.
Nurnberg was very poor today.
They never looked like they were playing at home.

Default Hansa cog wrecked again

FC Hansa Rostock stumbles again, losing to Nürnberg and suffering their second defeat in two matches.

The learning curve has proved steep for promotion club Hansa Rostock. A week after their 0-3 defeat against Bayern München, FCH were defeated by 1. FC Nürnberg 1-2 (0-2) in their first match at home. Unlike Hansa, the result for Nürnberg means the Cup winners are not faced with a weak showing this early in the season. Nürnberg rebounded after losing their first match of the season 0-2 against Karlsruher SC.

Long shots from Tomas Galasek (16th min.) and Peer Kluge (26th min.) put the guests in the lead in front of a crowd of 25,000. Only Orestes was able to score for Hansa in the 63rd minute.

Nürnberg prove dominant

FCN established themselves early, proving their superiority in all areas of play in the first half. Nürnberg reacted quicker to situations, played more agressively for ball control and took advantage of their technical superiority. The squad of head coach Frank Pagelsdorf, on the other hand, lacked energy and were unable to assert themselves. After falling behind 0-1, the team was visibly shaken, evinced by goalie Stefan's inability to stop a bouncing shot.

Winning for the first time with a team in the Bundesliga in Rostock, coach Hans Meyer's squad missed an opportunity before the half to make it 3-0 and seal the victory. Robert Vittek failed to capitalise on two chances, first in the 15th minute and again in the 30th when he sent an undefended shot over the cross bar.

FCN back off

After the half, FCN backed off and relied on defensive play, allowing the hosts to better develop their attack, which they did with more aggressive play and more success in duels. The final goal was a header scored by Stefan Beinlich after a free kick.

Marcel Schied and Heath Pearce both failed to exploit good opportunities to equalise.

I predicted the same result in the Prediction League.

Expected Nurnberg win.

Saw the highlights on German TV, Nurnberg played much better.

Ex-Gladbacher Kluge scored a good goal.

FCN without two

1. FC Nürnberg will have to make do without both Angelos Charisteas and Javier Pinola when they host Werder on Saturday.

Angelos Charisteas is ruled out with foot ligament problems and will be replaced by Nicky Adler.

Javier Pinola is out with a thigh strain.
