Hertha Berlin Into Uefa Cup

Hertha Berlin have been confirmed as the team to secure Germany’s additional place in next season’s Uefa Cup thanks to their ‘Fair Play’ ranking.

The capital club top the ‘Fair Play’ table of Bundesliga clubs on the basis of the number of yellow and red cards they have picked up this season combined with the independent judgement of the DFB referees panel.

The ‘Fair Play’ ranking encompasses respect for opponents, referees, as well as the behaviour of the fans.

Uefa awarded both Denmark and Germany an additional spot in next season’s Uefa Cup for topping the European rankings. Last season it was Mainz, who benefited from the ‘Fair Play’ rankings.

“It was great to receive the news after the final match of the season” revealed Hertha manager Dieter Hoeneß.

Despite only finishing tenth in the Bundesliga, Hertha can now look forward to European football next season. “Now that we have been given this chance, we’ll have to make the most of it” said Hoeneß.

Trainer Lucien Favre was also delighted with the announcement saying: “It is a tremendous development for the players.”

The preparation for the start of next season will now have to be completely reorganised with the first round of qualification taking place in mid-July.

According to a report in the Berliner Zeitung Hertha Berlin have signed Bulgarian striker Valeri Domovchisky until 2012.

According to the report Hertha will have to pay €1.6 million to Levski Sofia for the player that they took on loan in the winter break.

“I am looking forward to my time in Berlin and want to help Hertha BSC” the striker said.

Domovchisky has struggled to make an impact at the Olympiastadion since his January move due to injury, but did make four substitute appearances towards the end of the season.

On the last game of the season he became the last player to score against the legendary Oliver Kahn as Hertha went down to a 4-1 loss at the Allianz Arena.

Despite his difficulties, Hertha have seen enough to snap him up on a longer-term permanent deal

HERTHA ELECT NEW PRESIDENT

Hertha Berlin have elected a new president following their annual general meeting on Friday night.

Werner Gegenbauer received 77.8% of the votes to replace Bernd Schiphorst with nobody standing against the 57-year-old.

It was a positive evening for the club, who were recently awarded a place in the UEFA Cup through the fair play rankings with Germany one of three nations to earn an extra berth in the competition.

An estimated profit of six million euros for the 12 months trading up to June 30, 2008 was reported with the club's debts reduced to 30 million euros in the process.

"We have achieved an extraordinary result financially," said general manager Dieter Hoeness.

Things could be better on the field, though, despite their unexpected qualification for the UEFA Cup.

Berlin ended the Bundesliga campaign with a 4-1 defeat at champions Bayern Munich to finish 10th.

However, coach Lucien Favre was optimistic about improving on that next season.

"I know we want to be fighting for the title at some stage, but next season our aim is to qualify for the UEFA Cup," said the Swiss coach.

Contract for youngster

One Hertha prospect will be part of the first team squad next season.

Youngster Florian Riedel put pen to paper on a professional contract, signing for three years.

The 18 year old midfielder plays for Hertha since 2005.

Hertha entertain English giants

Hertha BSC Berlin will play English record champions Liverpool FC in pre-season.

The 2005 Champions League winners will visit Berlin's Olympic stadium on July 22nd, with the kick-off time still to be announced.

"The perfect attunement"

Liverpool will play their complete team, including superstars Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and all new signings.

"The match against Liverpool is an important test for us. The English record champions are star-studded throughout. The match is the perfect attunement for the new season for Berlin's football fans", Hertha sporting director Dieter Hoeneß said.

Also, Hertha BSC will play in a tournament hosted by Mallorca.

The tournament starts on August 1st, with every team playing two games.

The other teams involved will be Bundesliga side Hannover 96, Newcastle United and hosts RCD Majorca.

Hertha have brought another new player. He is Rodnei, 22-year-old brazilian centre-back, 1.90 metres tall. He comes from Pão de Açúcar Esporte Clube (SP). Rodnei- Profil - transfermarkt.de

New faces at Hertha BSC

There were some new faces to be seen at Hertha's first day of training on Thursday, June 26.

Marc Stein and Brazilians Kaka and Rodnei were on the pitch for the entire training session. Maximilian Nicu was suffering from a calf problem and remained indoors.

Favre sings Rodnei's praises

Rodnei is a 22-year old defender who transferred to Berlin from Polish first-division side Jagiellonia Bialystok. In December, the 1.9-metre tall player participated in a tryout, and didn't fail to impress.

"He's very tough in duels", said coach Lucien Favre. He's inked a deal for one year, with the option of two more years.

Lima loan

Srdjan Lakic was also present at the training session. But Sporting Director Dieter Hoeneß pointed out that "Lakic is holding talks with other clubs. And so there could be some changes." And Hoeneß explained the absence of Mineiro and André Lima. "Mineiro's situation still isn't resolved. As for André Lima, it seems we're going to send him on loan to Brazil for a year. There are two solid offers from Brazil."

Arne Friedrich, Joe Simunic and Lukasz Piszczek are not yet in training because they're playing for Germany in EURO 2008. Friedrich will be on vacation for three weeks after Sunday's final. Simunic will arrive on July 12, and Piszczek on July 1.

Lucio's rehab program ends on June 29. Then the Brazilian will proceed to the training camp. As well as the players already under contract, Hertha are expected to acquire another striker and an offensive midfielder.

Lima going to FC Sao Paulo

After just a year, André Lima's Bundesliga adventure is over for now.

The 23-year old is being sent on loan to FC Sao Paolo. The Hertha BSC striker will stay there until the end of the 2008-2009 season. He will wear the number 19.

Hertha against Moldovan club

Bundesliga side Hertha BSC will meet Moldovan club Nistru Otaci in the first qualifying round for the UEFA Cup.

That was the result of today's draw in Nyon (Switzerland).

"Obviously there's not much I can say at the moment, but it's not the first time we've been drawn against a Moldovan team. If we want to reach the UEFA Cup proper we have to get past each team we face anyway. We will approach the task fully concentrated", Hertha sporting director Dieter Hoeneß commented.

At home in the first leg

The matches will be played on July 17 and 31, with Hertha having home advantage in the first leg.

The Berliners had been given an additional place in the UEFA Cup qualifying rounds as winners of the Bundesliga fairplay rankings.

Lima: "I will be better prepared"

Hertha striker Andre Lima has left the Bundesliga and joined FC Sao Paulo on loan. Here's what he had to say when he took farewell of Berlin.

Question: Andre Lima, you're leaving Hertha and Berlin after one year, why?

Andre Lima: My first attempt in the Bundesliga didn't work out as well as I imagined. Now I return to Brazil to prepare for a second attempt.

Question: Some papers claimed that you were not comfortable in Berlin.

Lima: That's wrong. I have been really comfortable here and have been treated well by everyone.

Question: What are your aims for the upcoming season?

Lima: I want to put in good performances for Sao Paulo to be better prepared for a return.

Stein: "The UEFA Cup is a little gift"

Hertha BSC's new signing Marc Stein had reason to celebrate in the training camp. Here's what he had to say about the upcoming season.

Question: Pre-season isn't the best of times for a footballer, but it's part of the game, isn't it?

Marc Stein: Yes, of course. We have to work hard to acquire the foundations. The more you do here the more you profit over the course of the season.

Question: You joined Hertha from Rostock. What are your goals for the season?

Stein: We have to improve on last season. A lot depends on the start. We have to start well, then we could attack at the top.

Question: There's also the UEFA Cup to look forward to...

Stein: There will be some tough opponents in the UEFA Cup, and of course we mustn't underestimate Nistru. But the UEFA Cup is a little gift. We have to take along as much as we can. In the Bundesliga we have an away game first, and we want to show that we can play better on the road as last season.

Brazilian leaves Hertha BSC

Now it is official. Hertha will not extend the contract with Mineiro. The club regrets that the decision took so long.

The 32-year-old midfielder joined the capital city club in January 2007 from the Brazilian first division club Sao Paulo.

38 appearances

Since then, the Copa America winner made 38 first team appearances for Hertha, scoring two goals in the process.

His first goal was a real screamer against HSV at the Olympic stadium on his debut. Hertha won 2-1 on that day.
