Default Slomka: Defence Key To Success

Schalke continued their recent winning form and made up for their disappointment against Valencia by overcoming Norwegian side Rosenborg at the Lerkendal in Trondheim.

In an open and entertaining game, it was the visitors who left with the valuable three points after second half goals from Jermaine Jones and Kevin Kuranyi sealed victory.

Trainer Mirko Slomka highlighted his team’s ability to stop Rosenborg as the key to their win.

“We got into the game well early on and created chances” he explained.

“But Rosenborg were always a danger on the counter attack. After the break we were able to stop these counters, which combined with the opening goal was the key to tonight’s win.”

Default Schalke 0-2 Karlsruhe

Promoted Karlsruher SC stay on cloud number nine. Title hopefuls FC Schalke 04 were unable to stop KSC from securing their fourth away win.

Karlsruhe leapfrogged Schalke into second place thanks to a 2-0 win and are just two points behind FC Bayern now.

First home defeat since March

Schalke looked tired in their seventh match in the space of three weeks, conceded their first defeat of the season and their first home defeat since March 2 (0-2 against HSV).

Christian Timm opened the scoring from Tamas Hajnal's pass midway through the second half, handing Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer his first goal against in 446 minutes.

Timm brace

And it was again Timm from Hajnal's pass who made sure of the points for KSC seven minutes from time.

Schalke were made to work hard to create chances. Jermaine Jones (22, 26) and Kevin Kuranyi (42) had the only ones in the first half.

Kuranyi goal ruled out

Kuranyi then was unlucky when a "goal" after 64 minutes was ruled out for offside.

Karlsruhe's only chance in the first half had seen Alexander Iashvili's deflected cross come back off Neuer's right-hand post.

Not surprised they lost.

It's a defeat they deserved.
Karlsruhe were too strong for them.

Default Bordon: We’re Only Human

Schalke captain Marcelo Bordon has come out in defence of his team mates following the criticism of their weekend defeat to Karlsruhe.

“We’re only human and we can’t win every game. If we didn’t lose a single game, then we would be the greatest team in the world” he said.

Even though the Königsblauen knew that they wouldn’t go through the entire season unbeaten, their first defeat of the season hurts.

Many predicted that they would grab their fifth straight win against KSC, but Edmund Becker’s side had other ideas. Two goals from Christian Timm condemned Mirko Slomka’s team to a 2-0 defeat at the Veltins Arena.

Tiredness played a part in their loss, but the side do not want to use that as an excuse.

“The legs were not the problem, but the minds” admitted striker Kevin Kuranyi.

“We simply didn’t do enough to win.”

Jermaine Jones added that, “You just don’t win in the Bundesliga playing at 80% of your capacity.”

Mirko Slomka is hoping that the return from injury of Christian Pander, Levan Kobiashvili, Mladen Krstajic, and Halil Altintop will boost his side.

Default Bad luck for Varela - again

Gustavo Varela has suffered yet another injury.

The Schalke midfielder was in the squad against Karlsruher SC on Saturday after overcoming a serious knee injury.

But despite coming on in the second half, Varela's day ended with a visit to club doctor Bernd Brexendorf.

Injured during the warm-up

"I suffered a muscular injury in my thigh while warming up", the Uruguayan revealed.

Varela is getting treatment and is training on his own for the moment.

Two Schalke stars sidelined

Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04 will have to make do without two experienced players in the weeks to come.

Leven Kobiashvili (adductor) won't have to undergo surgery, but the Georgian international will be out for eight weeks.

Gustavo Varela will be sidelined for about a month after tearing a thigh muscle.

Default Royal Blues defeat SV Wuppertal 3-1

Without a number of first-team regulars FC Schalke 04 took on SV Wuppertal in a friendly at the Park Stadium on Wednesday.

And at the end of a fairly contested 90 minutes the Royal Blues ran out 3-1 victors over the leaders of the third-tier Regional League North.

Just ten professionals

Markus Heppke (6), Carlos Grossmüller (36) and Sören Larsen (78) got the goals for Schalke, Mahir Saglik (41) replied for the visitors.

Owing to the international break and a number of injuries head coach Mirko Slomka had just ten members of his senior squad at his disposal, forcing him to call upon Marc Lorenz and Giuseppe Pisano from the second string plus Danny Latza, Dominique Wassi and Carlos Zambrano from the under-19s.

Heppke opener

Nevertheless the Royal Blues got off to a good start against their high-flying visitors and took the lead after just six minutes.

Larsen fed strike partner Markus Heppke in the penalty area and Heppke fired a crisp right-foot shot past Christian Maly in the Wuppertal goal.

Default Three set to return

The two-week international break is giving Schalke coach Mirko Slomka and his staff valuable time to ease injured players back into training.

This is how the injury list stands at present:

Peter Lovenkrands: The back injury that has forced him to sit out training for the last few days has cleared up and he is expected to return tomorrow (Tuesday).

Rafinha: The Brazilian had to go off during the friendly against Wuppertal due to a cut lower leg but he too is expected to resume training on Tuesday.

Halil Altintop: The Turkey striker suffered a muscle tear during the home clash with Hertha BSC Berlin on 28 September. "We're putting him through a fitness test on Monday and Tuesday and if everything goes well he'll be back in training on Wednesday", said club doctor Bernd Brexendorf.

Mathias Abel: The cruciate ligament tear sustained in training will keep him out until the second half of the season at least. The defender is currently doing regenerative work at the club's medicos rehab centre.

Default Schalke close on Brazilian

Schalke are set to sign Brazilian midfielder Jose Roberto de Oliveira.

The 26-year-old, often referred to as Ze Roberto II, currently plays for Brazilian outfit Botafogo but Schalke are thought to be closing in on a 3million euros (£2.1million) deal.

Ze Roberto is expected to join Schalke in the January transfer window as coach Mirko Slomka looks to reinforce his squad.

"We are interested in signing him, but as yet nothing is signed," Schalke president Josef Schusenberg told Reviersport.

Ze Roberto, whose contract with Botafogo expires in 2008, has made 65 appearances for the Rio de Janeiro-based side and has scored 18 times.

Default Schalke lose ground

Hansa Rostock prove to be a tricky test for Schalke 04. Last years runners up are having a stop start to this season and can only draw away.

Fifth placed Schalke had an unbeaten away record to preserve on the road against FC Hansa Rostock.

The DKB-Arena was brimming full with 29.000 packed in to witness the game.

Asamoah scores

The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute when Asamoah pounced on a loose ball in the box. It was his third league goal of the campaign.

Stein pounces

In the 56th minute the home side drew level. A mix up between goalkeeper Neuer and Rafinha resulted in Stein slotting home the equaliser.

Schalke play Chelsea FC next Wednesday in the Champions League but their Bundesliga form will have to improve if they are to make it to next seasons competition.

The draw means that Schalke are in fifth spot and have seventeen points after ten games whilst Rostock move up to 12th in the Bundesliga with ten points.

Default Neuer Apologises For Error

Manuel Neuer had a very good game for Schalke as they faced Hansa Rostock at the DKB Arena- that is until the 56th minute when his error gifted the home side their equaliser.

Having comfortably collected a cross, the young keeper advanced to the edge of his penalty area preparing to start the Königsblauen on the way to another attack. However his throw to Rafinha went awry and let in Marc Stein for the equaliser.

“I wanted to start our next attack as quickly as possible” he explained. “The goal was my mistake, and I apologise to all Schalke fans because we didn’t win because of it.”

The 21 year old however didn’t let the error affect him during the game pulling off a fine save from Christian Rahn.

None of the Schalke players are blaming Neuer, but Gerald Asamoah did joke that Neuer owed them a clean sheet in the upcoming Champions League tie with Chelsea.
