Fourth successive win for HSV
Rafael van der Vaart was once again instrumental as the "Red Shorts" kept their run going. Leaders Schalke lost their second match in a row.
HSV climbed four places into tenth spot with 27 points. The Hanseatics are four points clear of the relegation zone after maximum points from their last four matches.
Schalke will stay on top of the table with 49 points, but VfB Stuttgart, Werder Bremen and FC Bayern München could close the gap to one, three and six points respectively with wins on Saturday.
Van der Vaart and Olic score
The "Royal Blues" started the better side, but failed to convert their chances.
HSV captain van der Vaart punished the hosts with his opener twenty minutes from time before Ivica Olic was at the end of a counter-attack ten minutes later to make sure of the win for HSV.

HSV win 2-0 away to Schalke!
Huub Stevens, Frank Rost and Mathias Abel made a triumphant return to Gelsenkirchan on Friday night, as HSV beat the Bundesliga table toppers Schalke 2-0 in their own back yard. It was the 4th straight HSV win under their new coach Stevens. Skipper Rafael van der Vaart opened the scoring on 71 minutes, before new signing Ivica Olic wrapped the game up with a strike 10 minutes from time.
Key players missing on both sides
HSV coach Huub Stevens was without five players in the sold out Veltins-Arena: Juan Pablo Sorin, Vincent Kompany, Mario Fillinger, Nigel de Jong and Collin Benjamin all missed the trip to Gelsenkirchen. Schalke coach Mirko Slomka was also without the same number of players: Gustavo Varela, Lincoln, Peter Lövenkrands, Gerald Asamoah and Christian Pander all missed out through injury or suspension.
Schalke on top
Guy Demel returned to the HSV side after a 6 week break through injury, and the visitors needed him, as table-topping Schalke took the game to HSV from the off. On 3 minutes the 6,000 travelling HSV fans collectively held their breath, as Dario Rodriguez toe poked a Levan Kobiashvili free kick just past the post from 4 metres out under pressure from Joris Mathijsen. Six minutes later, Frank Rost produced a top drawer save against his former club, somehow touching a free kick taken by Hamit Altintop onto a post. HSV was forced to defend in the opening exchanges as Schalke dictated the game.
Solitary first half chance
It took until the 25th minute for the home side to create a further chance, as Rafinha fired over following a mazy solo run. Nine minutes later Fabian Ernst headed over while unmarked. Two minutes before the break HSV should have taken what would have been an undeserved lead as Alex Laas missed a good opportunity. It was the only HSV chance of the first half.
Captain fantastic!
The HSV keeper Rost was forced into action six minutes into the second half as he saved a header by Kuranyi. Van der Vaart hit the outside netting as he curled a shot from the edge of the area. Moments later, the home side had two chances in quick succession as Rost first denied Ernst and then Hamit Altintop. Kuranyi missed a further chance just seconds before HSV turned the game on its head. On 71 minutes, van der Vaart capitalised on a defensive mistake to open the scoring against the run of play, sending the huge contingent of HSV fans into raptures of joy.
All out attack to no avail
Schalke threw everything they had at the visitors and the second half substitute Özil tested Rost with a shot. A couple of minutes later Schalke were hit on the counter attack as fine approach work by Jarolim (who picked up his 10th booking of the season, forcing him to miss the round 25 home game against Bayer Leverkusen next Sunday), set up Olic who scored his second goal in as many games to put the game beyond Schalke, whose fans booed and whistled their team.
As the ref blew for time, the HSV celebrated with their army of fans, while the home side were left wondering whether or not they had blown their title ambitions because of their lack of scoring prowess, and of course a superb performance by their former keeper Frank Rost who returned to haunt them.
Match details:
Schalke: Neuer - Rafinha, Bordon, Krstajic, Rodriguez (75.Özil) - F. Ernst, Bajramovic, Kobiashvili - Hamit Altintop (70.Larsen), Kuranyi, Halil Altintop (81.Boenisch)

Quick Schalke stats
Current League Form: WWDLL
On their last 3 matches Schalke managed to get only 1 point. Will they negative results continue? Will they continue to drop points again? We should learn that next week. It's a big possibility.
