FC Twente closing in on McClaren

Quote:
Dutch side FC Twente claim they are close to appointing Steve McClaren as their new coach - despite opposition from their own supporters.

Chairman Joop Munsterman has shown the former England boss, 47, around the club and is waiting for a response.

"Ninety per cent [of fans] think why McClaren?" he said. "But (he is) used to working with top players."

Twente finished fourth last season to secure a place in the Champions League qualifiers for the first time.

McClaren, who has had spells as Middlesbrough manager and number two to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, has been out of the game since being sacked by England in November after failing to secure a place at Euro 2008.

So far he has refused to confirm he is in the running for the post and maintained that stance on Friday.

"I'm wanting to get back into the game," he told Sky Sports News.

"I'm ready now, I'm fresh, recovered. I feel as if I've still got a lot to prove and a lot to give to football.

"Whether it's in this country or abroad, we'll have to wait and see."

Poor FC Twente fans, now they know what it feels like to be an England fan 2 years ago.

I guess McClaren has the Berti Vogts factor in him as well...

Ajax Amsterdam confirmed on Tuesday they are in talks with Real Madrid about the transfer of striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar but said no deal had yet been agreed.

The 25-year-old Dutch international, who is recovering from an ankle injury, was linked with a move to Spain in the January transfer window to replace compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is out for the rest of the season with a knee problem.

“Ajax is in talks with Real Madrid about the potential transfer of Klaas Jan Huntelaar to the Spanish club. At the moment there is no deal between the clubs,” read a statement posted on the club’s website on Tuesday.

According to media reports on Monday, Real Madrid are willing to pay 20 million euros ($25.22 million) for Huntelaar, whose Ajax contract expires in June 2010.

Huntelaar, who joined the club in January 2005, has scored 76 goals in 92 league matches for the Amsterdam team. He has also netted 10 times in 18 appearances for his country.
