Default Chelsea & PSV to Link Up

Chelsea are close to striking a deal which will effectively lead to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven acting as their nursery club, according to British newspaper reports on Sunday.

As part of the proposed agreement between the two clubs, Chelsea are helping to finance a big-money move by Santos defender Alex to PSV, said the reports.

'Nothing's been properly finalised just yet but there are clear advantages for everyone concerned,' PSV chairman Harry van Raaij was quoted as saying in the News of the World.

'It is true Chelsea are behind this signing of Alex for PSV. Everyone's hopeful we can continue to work together for the good of both clubs.'

Brazilian Alex, 21, will spend a maximum of two years with PSV before joining Chelsea, said the newspaper reports.

The proposed link up between Chelsea and PSV would resemble the co-operation deal Manchester United signed with Belgian club Antwerp in 1998.

Default New deal for van basten

Dutch legend Marco van Basten has signed a new contract with Ajax.
Van Basten has made great strides since taking up the reins of Ajax's youth team, prompting suggestions that he would move elsewhere in the summer.

Ajax have been deeply impressed with van Basten's efforts and have warded off the threat of him heading for pastures new by tying him to the club until the summer of 2005.

"Contrary to earlier reports, Ajax have only today reached formal agreement with Marco about the extension of his contract," said technical manager Arie van Eijden. "Ajax are very pleased that Marco will be part of the technical staff next year as well."

The 39-year-old is set to take charge of Ajax's reserves alongside Johnny van't Schip, and it is being suggested that van Basten is being groomed as the long-term successor to Ronald Koeman at the Amsterdam ArenA.
