It was a tough loss for Toronto Croatia Friday night.
Squaring off with rivals Portugal FC on the Hershey Centre pitch, the squad dropped a 2-1 decision in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Soccer League (CSL) Championship playoffs.
Toronto Croatia's fortunes took a turn for the worse when their goalkeeper was ejected.
“The most exciting part of the game was when they (Portugal) scored their second goal,” said Toronto Croatia spokesperson Pino Jazbec. “Our goalie (took) a penalty and got ejected...they scored against us and we had no goalie. We played with 10 men for the last 20 minutes.”
Tihomir Maletic scored the lone goal for Toronto Croatia.
Portugal FC's Daniel Amaral scored the game-winning goal on a penalty shot.
“Portugal passed the ball nicely,” Jazbec said. “They played a good practical game.”
The team's hopes to defend their 2007 CSL championship were dashed with the loss.
