Serbian White Eagles went into high gear at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke to come up with a 5-1 victory over Brampton Lions at just the right time of the season and Portugal FC also scored over International Division leaders Italia Shooters, a 3-2 result - two games in the CSL Friday night. There are nine of the eleven CSL teams in action action this weekend as teams battle for a playoff spot with just four weeks remaining in the regular season schedule. It’s the top eight spots in the overall standings that are up for grabs and 10 of the 11 CSL teams are still in the picture for a crack at the Canadian Soccer League championship.




Dragan Radovic struck his 11th, a penalty kick, and 12th of the season to put his team well on the way to victory over Brampton at 25 and 38 minutes for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Darryl Gomez made it 3-0 for Serbia, he broke through the middle to find the net from 15 yards. Brampton's Alex Arbello reduced Serbia's lead to 3-1 at 59 minutes, then Gomez scored his second to make it 4-1 for Serbian White Eagles at the 61st minute mark.

Sasa Viciknez completed the scoring, his 8th of the season at 67 minutes, a 5-1 final to move Serbia within just two points of Italia Shooters.

Mike DiLuca opened the scoring for Portugal FC at 11 minutes at Lamport Stadium and Selmir Sehic made it 2-0 with a spectacular volley from 45 ards that caught Italia 'keeper Camilo Benzi out of his net. David DiPlacido struck for Italia at 68 minutes but Emerson Fiti made it 3-1 for Portugal with a free-kick minutes later. With Portugal coasting to a comfortable 3-1 win, Kadian Leckie caught the net for Italia Shooters at 94 minutes, but too late to bid for an equalizer - a 3-2 final score.

Other games this weekend will see TFC Academy travel to Quebec for a game with the Attak on Saturday afternoon and the Border Stars will fight it out for an important three points with St. Catharines Wolves later in the evening. Both teams need wins to be in the playoff picture.

On Sunday, the improving Astros are at home in Esther Shiner Stadium for a 5 o’clock kickoff against Serbian White Eagles – that’s a change in the starting time from the original schedule and this game is especially attractive as both teams strive for a favoured home draw in the quarter finals of the playoffs.

Brampton Lions and Portugal FC return to action from their Friday games to meet at Victoria Park on Sunday, a 2.30 pm start.

Portugal FC clinch playoff spot following exciting 5-3 victory over Brampton Lions Wednesday night

Portugal FC is the sixth team to secure a playoff spot following a 5-3 defeat of Brampton Lions at Victoria Park in Brampton, a rescheduled game from the postponement of September 7 and the only game played in the CSL Wednesday night. It was an end-to-end goal-fest with lots of exciting action for the midweek fans, a game that saw Portugal jump to a 4-0 lead after just 25 minutes and a game in which no less than three players including the CSL’s leading scorer, Daniel Nascimento, struck two goals apiece.


Portugal’s Emerson Fiti opened the scoring after six minutes, Wigor Gomes made it 2-0 for the visitors after 19 minutes, Mike DiLuca scored Portugal’s third four minutes later and two minutes later at the 25th minute mark, Gomes scored his second and his team’s fourth for a 4-0 halftime score.

While the team from the northwest of Toronto looked more like getting into the game in the second half, especially when Adolfo Mella made it 4-1 at 51 minutes, Portugal FC were determined to stay on top and succeeded when Emerson Fiti scored his second and Portugal’s fifth at 55 minutes.

A strong Brampton rally followed and the home side was rewarded with two goals, both by Daniel Nascimento, his 17th at 58 minutes and his 18th at the 80th minute mark.

Portugal FC are still fourth in the International Division following the win and with 30 points from an 8-6-6 WLT record and two games still to play, the team from Toronto’s west-end has a playoff berth leaving two spots still to be decided during the last two weeks of regular season play.
