Livermore dismisses Hughes move rumours
Norwich City have dismissed rumours of a move for Birmingham City's want-away midfielder Bryan Hughes.
The 27-year-old has turned down a new three-year contract offer by Blues boss Steve Bruce, saying he need regular first team football.
And although his chances of regular Premiership appearances would appear to be greater at Norwich, Canaries assistant manager Doug Livermore summed up the situation in two words yesterday: “Total; speculation.”
City are keen on adding a right-sided midfielder to the current squad and Hughes - who played against City in the 2002 play-off final defeat at the Millennium Stadium - would appear to fit the bill.
Manager Nigel Worthington has also made inquiries over Arsenal youngster David Bentley, although the club line on that move yesterday was that the situation was ongoing.
They also dismissed as “total speculation” suggestions that Peterborough United may be about to make a move for one, or all, of City youngsters, Ryan Jarvis, Ian Henderson and Jason Shackell.
Worthington is expected back at the Colney training centre today after a short holiday and it's likely that one of his major jobs in the coming weeks will be to pursue any positive transfer interests.
The manager appears to have lost one of his initial chases, for Leicester City's Riccardo Scimeca, with the player reportedly opting to stay in the Midlands and move to West Bromwich Albion.
However, although that deal looked to be signed, sealed and delivered, West Brom yesterday said reports that Scimeca had become their first summer signing were premature.
“Although we have opened talks with the player, personal terms have yet to be finalised,” said Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace. “We will make an announcement in due course.”
