No Easter fixtures next year
Norwich City will have no Easter fixtures next season because the weekend has been designated to stage 2006 World Cup qualifiers.
FIFA confirmed today that there will be international fixtures on Saturday March 26 and Wednesday March 30 – the dates set aside for England's two home 2006 World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan.
It means that no Premiership fixtures will be scheduled for that weekend, traditionally one of the most lucrative periods of the year for clubs.
However, the knock-on effect has also meant that Sevn-Goran Eriksson's wish for the immediate start of a two-year trial into a two-week winter break has had to be pushed back until the following season.
For amid existing fixture congestion, the loss of two Premiership fixture dates has ensured there is now simply no way to fit a clear weekend into the 2004-5 season, meaning that clubs like the Canaries will play through January unless they suffer a second successive FA Cup third-round exit.
