Worthington - Let's keep it sensible
CITY boss Nigel Worthington laid out the first brief brush stroke of Norwich City's Premiership thinking last night by insisting: "We'll be sensible!"
The 42-year-old boss guaranteed himself a lasting place in the club's managerial hall of fame by matching the promotion achievements of Ron Saunders (1972), John Bond (1975) and Ken Brown (1982 and 1986) after ending City's nine-year spell in the First Division doldrums with last night's ticket to the top flight.
This afternoon the manager, the board and chief executive Neil Doncaster will sit down for the first time together as a Premiership club and plot their way forward in a long-scheduled board meeting – well aware, if only from Ipswich Town's shining example, that promotion to the Premiership can easily lure the unwary into all manner of financial nightmares. All that money can go straight to people's heads. But there is little chance of Worthington's feet leaving the floor.
"We're not going to get ourselves into the situation that other clubs have found themselves in," said Worthington. "We're going to be sensible. There'll be some money to spend on players, some to clear some of the debt and some money to spend on the stadium and I'm happy with that."
First, however, the City chief has set his sights on making sure that their efforts this season earns their due reward in the shape of the Nationwide League Division One title.
"That's what I want – I want to try and get a medal for the players," said Worthington, as he dedicated last night's events at Carrow Road to the club, to the players, to the supporters and to his wife, Sandra, and the couple's three boys. He also reserved a special mention for the club's principal shareholders – TV cook Delia Smith and her publishing husband Michael Wynn Jones – whose money and backing have taken both him and the football club back into the big time.
"I'm delighted for everyone, but particularly for Delia and Michael," said Worthington. "I said to them when I first got the job to give me three years and I'll get them up – it's actually taken three and a half as Michael keeps reminding me!"
As ever, the word "togetherness" was never far from his lips. "It's been a real team effort," he said. "This is a 'we' moment not an 'I' – that's been our motto from day one. There's no single person that I can point out.
"It's a case of players, supporters, staff all working together towards one aim."
The fact that Worthington had kept the lid on City's celebrations until Crystal Palace's 3-0 win over Sunderland last night was born of bitter experience of football's ability to kick the smug firmly in the teeth.
"Until all the eggs have hatched, there's nothing to smile or shout about – and, by the way, we play Watford on Saturday!" said Worthington, his thoughts already turning to the next target on his list – the title.
"When we started the season, the first aim was always to get to the stage where we would avoid relegation by getting to 50 or 51 points. Then it was all about getting to the next stage, getting ourselves into the play-off places early doors. Once we'd done that, it was promotion.
"The one thing I want to happen now is for the players to get their medals – winning the title, that's the next stage. That's what we've got to focus on now."
