Default Worthington plots survival

Norwich boss Nigel Worthington should learn in the next two weeks how much money he can spend to give the Canaries a fighting chance in the Premiership.

Worthington's team were promoted when Sunderland failed to win at Crystal Palace but the manager said talks over a new budget had not started.

"We've not discussed it. I've been in the game a long time and I know that things can turn," he told BBC Sport.

"No doubt we'll sit down in the next couple of weeks and have a look."

He added: "What we will do is do it seriously. We will not blow every penny that we get into this football club."

Worthington has been backed by the Norwich board this season - spending £1m on three players ahead of the final promotion push.

But he is realistic about the gap in spending power between his own club and most of the managers he is about to battle with.

"We are never going to have as much as some of the other clubs but that's how we work here - we do what we can and what we can't do, we leave alone," he continued.

Even if millionaire chef Delia Smith - the joint majority shareholder at Carrow Road - does give Worthington a significant war chest, most will still tip his team from the drop.

But that has merely made the prospect of next season more delicious for the former Sheffield Wednesday and Northern Ireland captain.

I relish the challenge," he said. "I think it's happened since day one when the Premier League started - the three clubs that go up are more or less odds on to go back down again.

"So there's no change there, but it's a wonderful challenge. I'm absolutely thrilled.

"I've been on the record for the past two-and-a-half years saying that I wanted to be a manager in the Premiership. I am delighted I have done it with this football club.

"Now that I have done it - and as much as I know it's a major challenge and something myself and the staff will get our teeth into - I will relish it.

"The one thing that can be guaranteed, and the supporters here deserve, is that we will all give it 100%."
