Default GRANT UNVEILED BY CANARIES

Quote:
Grant decided to leave his post as West Ham assistant manager last week, but caretaker boss Martin Hunter remained in charge of The Canaries for Saturday's game with Queens Park Rangers while he put the finishing touches on a three-and-a-half year deal.

The former midfielder has now taken up his new position officially and is relishing the challenge ahead.

Grant, whose first game in charge will be against Birmingham on Tuesday, is hoping to guide Norwich away from the precarious position they currently occupy in The Championship and into the top flight.

"It's a fantastic opportunity," Grant told the club's official website. "It's a great honour and a great privilege and I'm looking forward to it.

"I know the expectations that are here and we all look forward to that challenge.

"Not only of getting Norwich back to The Premiership but also trying to keep them there."

Grant was in the stands for Norwich's 3-3 draw with QPR and was encouraged by what he saw.

"There might be some despondency because of the results, but on Saturday there was massive commitment from the players with the supporters well behind them.

"They all worked their socks off trying to get a result and to come to QPR and score three goals and not get all three points was disappointing - but not the effort and commitment that everyone showed."

Watford defender Malky Mackay, meanwhile, has ruled himself out of the running to become Grant's number two.

Mackay was tipped to become an assistant to Grant due to his past history with Norwich, but he has confirmed he will be staying at Vicarage Road to honour his contract.

"I am contracted to Watford until the end of the season and I am thrilled to be playing in The Premiership," he told the Pink'un. "At this moment in time, that's how it stays.

"Peter is a friend of mine and I a delighted for him. He will be a fantastic manager.

"A few people have been putting two and two together and making five. I didn't apply for the job.

"Maybe one day in the future, but at the moment I'm not ready to take that jump."

Good, if he left we'd be fucked if a centre-back got injured or lost form.

Delia's Grant delight

Quote:
Delia Smith has revealed that the Norwich board were united over the appointment of Peter Grant.

Grant does not have any full managerial experience, but he beat off stiff competition to replace Nigel Worthington at the Canaries helm.

Alan Pardew's former assistant at West Ham faces no easy task in reviving Norwich's fortunes, but it would appear that he will have the unwavering support of the Carrow Road board.

"He has got very good credentials and when we came to do our interviews, he impressed everybody deeply," Norwich director Smith told Sky Sports News.

"When we went away to think about it and then came back there were nine of us and he was number one for all nine, so it was unanimous.

"We had applicants in the three figures, but only interviewed six. We saw the six and were unanimous in wanting Peter. He was the only one offered the job."

Smith claims Grant ticked all the relevant boxes at his interview.

"Some of the qualities we wanted, you have seen this morning when you saw him speak," she added. "We wanted somebody who is hungry, who feels the passion because we feel passion is contagious. Those are the two things we wanted most of all."

Smith does not feel Grant's lack of experience will be an issue.

"He does have experience, even though he has not been a full-blown manager," said Smith. "He has been an assistant manager and has worked in The Premiership for two years."

Smith feels Grant has the chance to forge a successful career in East Anglia.

"I think it (Norwich job) is huge. I think we have everything in place here that if we get the right manager, anything is possible."

Norwich are in the wrong half of the table at present, but Smith feels Grant can turn their fortunes around.

"We are disappointed, but it is early days and three points puts you up five places so we can look forward to clawing back a few points in the next few games."
