Leon Hits Back
Injured City striker Leon McKenzie came out fighting today - determined to knock every last “ridiculous” rumour firmly on the head.
The 27-year-old's private life and, above all, that accidental, training ground clash with close pal Damian Francis has long been the subject of wild, message board rumour.
The fact that it is now getting back to his eight-year-old son, still at school in Norwich, has in part provoked today's attempt to put the record straight once and for all.
“I'm out to squash the rumours once and for all,” said McKenzie, in typically fighting form - as Canary fans have long come to expect from a player with such a rich family history in the sport of boxing.
“Yes I am officially now divorced. I've had a tough time,” said McKenzie. “But these things happen in life. And I don't let it affect me on the pitch. It was happening whilst I was scoring goals in the Premiership.
“But I've got two kids, I'm their Dad and they're still at school in Norwich. My eight-year-old gets to hear things and I don't think that's fair.”
Some of the things, in fairness, do border on the wholly bizarre - including the suggestion that McKenzie was locked away in a mental institution.
To a degree, McKenzie could see the funny side.
“People have been coming up to me and saying the oddest things,” he said.
“The only place that I've been locked up in is here at Colney, working my nuts off to try and get fit and get back in the team.”
As for Francis, McKenzie confirmed the two were still huge mates. Indeed the two roomed together for the remainder of last season - a situation that would be hard to believe were the rumours to be true.
“Damian's still a good mate. I spoke to him just last night and he's doing really well. Whoever is making these rumours up needs to get a life - maybe they're the ones that need to be in a mental home.
“So I'm squashing them all right now. And if I find out who it is that is spreading them I'll knock them out!,” joked McKenzie.
All of which overshadowed Saturday's injury news with Youssef Safri and Jurgen Colin both rated 50-50 by City boss Nigel Worthington while skipper Andy Hughes is a certain non-starter with thigh trouble.
