Open Cup second round- with no surprises

Soccer365

No Upsets In Lamar Second Round 28/06/07
The second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup concluded on Tuesday night with 16 first-round survivors squaring off in eight matches that provided a number of thrills, but no upsets.

The tournament's third round will kick off on July 9 with eight MLS clubs hosting Tuesday's eight winners, which represent six USL-1 and two USL-2 teams.

At the University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond, Va., the Richmond Kickers defeated the Cleveland City Stars, 2-1. The Kickers opened the scoring in the 28th minute on a goal by Matt Watson, and then doubled their lead during injury time of the first half through Robert Ssejjemba (45th minute). Cleveland tried to mount a comeback following halftime, but the Kickers held on for the victory despite a goal from Cleveland’s Nigel Codrington in the 64th minute. Richmond will face the Los Angeles Galaxy in the third round.

In Rochester, N.Y., the Rochester Raging Rhinos were victorious over the Western Mass. Pioneers by a score of 2-1. The Pioneers were the first to score, with Omar McFarlane slotting the ball home right before halftime (43rd minute). It took the Rhinos until the 83rd minute before they found an equalizer from Matthew Delicate to send the game into extra time. Then, in the 105th minute, Aaran Lines scored for Rochester, who held on for the win. The Rhinos play the New England Revolution in the third round.

The Harrisburg City Islanders beat the Ocean City Barons, 2-1, in Ocean City, N.J. Leon Brown of the Barons scored the first goal of the game in the 42nd minute, but the Islanders tied the game up two minutes later on a goal by Chad Severs (44th minute). Three minutes into the second half the Islanders found a second goal through David Schofield (48th minute), and that proved to be enough to see off the Barons. Harrisburg now faces D.C. United in the third round.

The Carolina RailHawks cruised to a 4-0 victory over Bavarian SC at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The RailHawks opened their scoring account with a goal from Connally Edozien in the 37th minute soon followed by Anthony Maher who scored right before halftime to double the lead going into the break. Carolina went up by three goals after Mahler scored again in the 56th minute. Marcio Leite added the finishing touch with a 79th minute goal. The RailHawks will face the Chicago Fire in the third round.

In Charleston, S.C., the El Paso Patriots hung on for 75 minutes before conceding a lone goal to the Charleston Battery in their 1-0 loss to the USL-1 side. Anthony Catalano was the lone goal scorer in the game and his goal was enough to send the Battery into the third round and a match up with the Houston Dyanamo.

The Atlanta Silverbacks, fresh off of their 10-0 victory in the first round, were held to only one goal by the Charlotte Eagles in Atlanta, Ga. Warren Ukah scored a goal in the 49th minute and it proved to be the game-winner as the Silverbacks went on to defeat the Eagles, 1-0. Atlanta will now face FC Dallas in the third round.

In St. Paul, Minn. the California Victory won their second straight U.S. Open Cup game on the road as they defeated the Minnesota Thunder, 1-0. Ricardo Sanchez scored the lone goal in the 95th minute to break a scoreless tie after the full 90 minutes of regulation. The game was not without additional excitement, as there were a total of four red cards handed out, two for each team, including one each in extra time. The Victory will play the Colorado Rapids in the third round.

The Seattle Sounders defeated their fellow USL-1 West Coast rivals, the Portland Timbers, by a score of 2-1 in Tukwila, Wash. Portland was the first team on the scoreboard as Justin Thompson scored in the 19th minute. Seattle bounced back, however, when Hugo Alcaraz-Cuella converted a penalty kick in the 42nd minute. Cameron Knowles of the Timbers received a red card in the 42nd minute, and the 10-man Timbers conceded another goal to Seattle in the 70th minute, scored by Jacob Besagno. Seattle will play CD Chivas USA in the third round.
