Soccer Insider
While others stumble, MLS keeps its balance
By Tobias Lopez
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
In sports vernacular, "parity" has almost become a dirty word.
For Major League Soccer, it's vital, it's essential, and it better not go away for at least 25 years or MLS surely will.
A look at the Western Conference standings show all five teams are still in the hunt for first place with each team having five to seven games remaining. Kansas City (11-8-5) is first with 38 points while the Burn (9-10-5, 32 points) is last, yet only six points off the lead.
"The league, where it is at the minute, is going to [have] parity because when you've had two or three good years, you're asked to give up some stuff for salary-cap reasons," Burn coach Colin Clarke said. "You look at the Premier League and there's three teams with a chance of winning and that's it. Is that nice? The other teams are fighting for a top 10 spot. [In MLS] there's 10 sets of supporters out there that still think they can win the thing, so that's got to be pretty good."
MLS is still pushing to establish steady attendance numbers. The league average of 15,233 after Saturday's games is respectable. But to convince sports editors and television executives that there's interest in the league, the numbers must continue to grow.
However, MLS fans remain far too casual at this point.
No fan in the nine seasons of play has passed their lifelong passion for the Columbus Crew down to their children, not yet anyway.
If, like the Premier League, the season began with no hope of winning the league title for clubs not named Arsenal, Manchester United or Chelsea, the American soccer fan simply wouldn't show up.
Without a salary cap and no free agency, the AEG-operated MLS teams would follow the free-spending policies of Phil Anschutz and buy a team much like Chelsea or, if you prefer baseball, the New York Yankees.
The stadium Anschutz built, LA's Home Depot Center, rolled out with a $140 million price tag.
Lamar Hunt, on the opposite end, spent about $30 million on Columbus Crew Stadium and is kicking in about $10 million for the $65 million Frisco Soccer and Entertainment Complex.
By forcing two key owners with opposite financial approaches to operate under the same constraints, the parity, stability and balance needed to sustain a professional soccer league in a sports-mad nation is ensured.
Surely soccer fans haven't forgotten the free-spending New York Cosmos, with Pele's million- dollar contract, helping the demise of the North American Soccer League.
If soccer fans have forgotten those lessons, look at history and thank parity that MLS is heading toward a 10th season, and not into the sports graveyard next to the USFL, XFL and WUSA.
One more time now, with feeling: Parity is good.
SPOTLIGHT ON ...
U.S. to face tough Panama
The year 2000 in United States soccer signaled a true changing of the guard as the Eric Wynalda era ended and the days of Landon Donovan began.
Wynalda's international career spanned 11 years and he finished as the U.S. National Team's all-time leading goal scorer with 34.
Donovan, 22, took another step closer to Wynalda's legacy Saturday with his 17th career goal, moving into a tie for fifth all-time with Earnie Stewart.
In his fifth year with the national team, Donovan can move past Stewart tonight when Panama hosts the United States in a World Cup qualifying semifinal-round game.
Donovan earned the second goal Saturday of the United States' 2-0 home victory against El Salvador.
"It will be very, very, very difficult in Panama," Donovan said after Saturday's victory. "But we are in good shape physically, because this game was pretty easy in terms of running, and we are ready."
Panama could indeed prove tough. The Central American team earned a 2-1 victory in Jamaica on Saturday; the Americans could only secure a 1-1 draw in Jamaica.
Burn defender Cory Gibbs started for the United States in Saturday's shutout and traveled with the 20-player contingent to Panama on Tuesday.
Burn forward Eddie Johnson was in camp with the national team last week but didn't travel to Panama.
U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard returned to Manchester United and was replaced by MetroStars goalkeeper Jonny Walker.

UPDATE
San Jose Earthquakes forward Brian Ching scored in his second consecutive match Saturday, netting the first U.S. goal against El Salvador. He scored the only goal for the United States in a 1-1 draw against Jamaica. Ching has solidified his role while partnering with Landon Donovan in San Jose. ... The United States has played Panama only once in history, a 2-1 U.S. victory July 14, 1993 in Dallas. ... U.S. midfielder Cobi Jones earned his 162nd cap Saturday, extending his team record. Jones is one appearance away from tying for fourth place on FIFA's all-time caps list.
Group 1 Standings
Team W L D Pts.
United States 1 0 1 4
Panama 1 1 0 3
El Salvador 1 1 0 3

the absence of intercontinental competition and relegation
is what removes excitement
not overstrong dynasties
parity imo is a dirty word
it is anti-competitiveness
holding back the natural progression of the strong
