Default Barton jailed

So finally Joey Barton's temper has landed him in jail. Six months for an assault in Liverpool over Christmas. Newcastle have said they are "considering the verdict"....which sounds a bit odd.

Does he have a future at the club? Keegan is not the sort of manager to turn his back on a troubled player, but with the Dabo court-case on the horizon, Barton is looking at another stretch. Maybe Newcastle would be wise to cut their losses and cancel his contract.

Such a shame because the lad has ability. He deserved his England cap last season and has been improving in the second half of the season after a bad start at St James', he just seems to have terrible anger issues.

IMO he got what he deserved and if there is any justice he'll be looking at another 6 months at least for the assault on Dabo.

The guy is a violent aggressive scumbag and has had far more chances than any one person deserves.

Stubbing a cigar out in the a youth team player's eye, assulting a 15 year old Everton supporter, most recently hospitalising Dabo and now attacking these two kids (one of whom he punched up to 20 times while pinning the guy to the ground) and those are just the incidents that are public knowledge.

Attacking little kids is cowardly and he's shown himself to be a coward on numerous occasions.

i know what you mean.

I listened to an interview with Barton on the BBC a few months back where he spoke very candidly about his "misdemeanours" (it was before the Xmas incident- whilst the Dabo incident couldnt be discussed for legal reasons ), and he sounded like little more than a hothead who didn't know how to walk away from a situation- the James Tandy incident was the highest profile, but even in a weird way you can sort of understand his stance, even if he really should know better- but apparently the assault that landed him in jail came about after he was dropped by Sam Allardyce against Wigan on Boxing Day, and told him he was going to Liverpool "to get fucked". therefore you can have little sympathy.

I'm sure he will be available for the new season, probably with a tag on. He got two character witnesses in Kevin Keegan & Peter Kay (not the comedian, the Sporting Chance rehab fella), and with his status I'm sure he will find a way out. But then the Dabo trial will be coming up.

Players like that don't deserve the rewards of the Premiership. For the reputation of the club, he should be sacked. He should never play for us again and I think the club should make a statement that they won't tolerate players acting in such a way.

Something is very wrong with Barton, no question about that.

I was reading an article about him before Christmas about his new life in Newcastle....but one month later he went into trouble again...and now he will be jailed.

And ALL knows him too and there are thousands of troublemakers out there, and when drunk people see Barton on the street...of course they'll make row with him....and he is not hard to provoke either.

BARTON CLEARED OF CRIMINAL DAMAGE

Quote:
Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton was cleared today of criminal damage.

The former Manchester City player, 25, was found not guilty at Liverpool Magistrates' Court of vandalising a taxi after a night out in March last year.

The player, who was last week jailed for six months for admitting assault and affray, left court to return to prison after a half-day trial.

Dabo - Barton is a coward

Quote:
Shocked

"English clubs teach you lots of lessons, but in this case they truly lack ethics and morals," Dabo said.

"Newcastle have invested a lot in this guy and they do not want to lose a lot of money. The club does not care about the law and it shocks me."

Barton is currently serving a six-month jail term which began on 20th May after pleading guilty to charges of assault and affray over an incident in McDonald's in Liverpool city centre on 27th December.

Barton has really screwed up his career and frankly if I was Newcastle I would let him go...he only played a handful of games last season, they bought him and he hasn't repaid them at all, I think he has been jail longer than he played for them. His attitude is disrespectful to the club and he shouldn't play for them anymore.

The Football Association has charged Newcastle's Joey Barton with violent conduct over his assault of then Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

Barton, 25, was given a four-month suspended prison sentence on 1 July for the May 2007 assault after admitting assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The new charge comes after the FA received the relevant documents from that hearing at Manchester Crown Court.

The former Manchester City player has two weeks to respond to the charge.

Barton was released from prison on Monday after serving 74 days of his six-month prison sentence for a separate assault, in which he attacked a teenager in Liverpool city centre last year.

Newcastle officials met Barton on Tuesday to discuss his future and Magpies boss Kevin Keegan told BBC Sport on Sunday that the player would be given a second chance by the club.

The case will be heard by an independent regulatory commission on an as yet unspecified date.

There is no maximum sentence which could be issued to Barton by the FA and but a lengthy ban and possible fine could be the outcome if he is found guilty.

Newcastle have responded to the charge by questioning why they should be penalised for an incident which took place so long ago, and while the player was at a different club.

"The club has sought clarification from the Football Association as to why this decision has been reached now, given the incident occurred nearly 15 months ago," Newcastle said in a statement.

"Joey will be requesting a personal hearing in relation to the charge and the club will be making no further comment on the matter at this time."

For their part, the FA insists its hands were tied while the criminal investigation was ongoing, and that with no video footage of the incident, it was unable to interview players who were central to the police's case.

"Having received relevant documentation, the Football Association has based the charge on the conviction," said BBC Five Live's Nigel Adderley.

"It is understood the FA will contest any claim that further punishment for the offence would be a case of double jeopardy."
