Unused to watch the new kits. I like them, but I didn't like that collar.

However, good to get in some fresh blood.

This signing makes me fairly certain that Allardyce will go with a 433. The attack now has great strength in depth:

RF: Smith, Solano, Duff
LF: Martins, Luque, Duff
CF: Owen, Viduka, Ameobi

That's what I think it'll turn out. For one thing, it's Luque's perfect role - the one he succeeded in at Deportivo, I think. It's also a great way of getting your options out there in variation. Martins on the left isn't the immediate choice, but as a great playr and, in particular, a great, pacey dribbler, I believe he fits in there, and he's the kind of player Allardyce would play there, imo.

Newcastle just beat Sampdoria 1-0.
Smith scored the only goal.

I think it is a good signing. Smith can be quite versatille, which is a good thing to have in a squad, especially with the injury record we have.

When everyone is fit, Smith will be on the bench.

If we play 4-4-2 it will be Owen - Martins/Viduka.

I don't think Smith would have signed unless he was promised first team football, if he starts then I don't see how he will be a striker if Owen, Martins and Viduka are all fit, I can see him playing a more attacking midfielder role.
