Newcastle United striker Obafemi Martins has revealed he was nearly killed by masked gunmen on a recent trip home to Nigeria.

Martins and a friend were surrounded at a petrol station on Monday night in Lagos when shots were fired, leaving the former Internazionale star fearing for his life.

The Nigeria international is now in Italy recovering from his ordeal and has been given the green light from doctors, much to the relief of Newcastle fans.

Martins now fears he will not be able to return home for some time and has hinted his international career may be on hold until his safety can be guaranteed.

"They weren't there to rob me but to finish me off," he told the Sun. "I thought I was going to die.

"They didn't say anything to me, but just started shooting at the car. It was hell. It all happened like in the movies.

"How I managed to escape is still shocking. I don't feel safe in Lagos anymore and don't think I want to return so fast.

"It's a great thing to play for your country, put smiles on the face of people and also feel safe among your family and fans.

"But when the situation gets out of hand, I don't think coming home is something I can even contemplate.

"I could have been a dead man by now. But I've had X-rays and doctors say I'll be fine."

I really have to question the logic of people like Martins, who make millions abroad, then go back home to their home countries, and live the rich life.

Poor people- hatred/jealousy for rich people.

But I hear this was because he missed an International game for Nigeria?

My bet is that it's the Nigerian FA guy who told him he should've gone to a more successful club last year, who is responsible for this action.

On a more serious note, I'm glad he is ok. Must have been s*** scary. I know I would just crumble up shivering in a pond of my own piss if it was me in that situation. Nigeria IS a dangerous place. A lot of crazy people there.

That is a serious allegation Kinny, we just don't know, its not right to label anyone for this, until the authorities investigate, we just don't know.

I'm glad he is alright. I think Newcastle is perfect for him, he will only get better from here on out.

NEWCASTLE striker Obafemi Martins's claim that he was shot at in his car last week has been called into question by police.

The Nigeria star said he feared for his life after his Mercedes was sprayed with bullets in the capital Lagos.

However, city police have now said Martins, 22, was asleep at his mother's house at the time of the attack, which left the player's friend and driver Femi Onipede injured.

Spokesman Bode Ojajuni said: "It is obvious Obafemi Martins was not in the car when the driver was shot at.

"The whole thing is still a puzzle, but from all indications it was not Martins who was the victim but his driver."
