Default Geremi seals Toon move

Quote:
Newcastle have completed the signing of Geremi after he was granted a work permit.

The Cameroon international agreed terms on a three-year deal and passed a medical earlier this week, but the move was subject to a successful application for the permit.

The application was successful and Geremi's free transfer from Chelsea has now been finalised.

He will link up with his new team-mates when they return from their pre-season training camp in Austria next week.

Geremi has been given the extra time to recover from his international duties at the end of last season.

The versatile midfielder becomes Allardyce's fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Mark Viduka, Joey Barton and David Rozehnal.

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is confident he has landed a genuine winner after Geremi completed his move to St James' Park.

The 28-year-old Cameroon international's free transfer from Chelsea was finally sealed on Friday when he was granted a work permit.

Geremi agreed a three-year contract and passed a medical earlier this week, and will join up with his new team-mates when they return from their pre-season training camp in Austria next week.

Allardyce is convinced the hugely-experienced player, who boasts an Olympic gold medal among his collection of honours from a career which saw Champions League success at Real Madrid and Barclays Premier League glory at Stamford Bridge, can bring a winning mentality with him to Tyneside.

He told his club's official website: "We have signed a player who is a real winner and who has played on the biggest stages for both his clubs and his country.

"He's been at Real Madrid and he's been at Chelsea, two of the top clubs in Europe, and that tells you he must be a quality player.

"It's a great bit of business for us and he's very keen to be successful at Newcastle United, as we all are, in the times ahead."

Geremi is Allardyce's fourth signing since he replaced Glenn Roeder at the helm - and is unlikely to be the last as the manager, backed by new owner Mike Ashley, homes in on his remaining targets.

But having already landed Mark Viduka, Joey Barton and David Rozehnal before Geremi's move was rubber-stamped, Allardyce is delighted.

"I still think that when you are targeting players like Mark Viduka, Joey Barton and David Rozehnal you have to stave off a lot more competition than we did with the sort of players I was bringing in at Bolton.

"That makes it hugely difficult. You have got to do a lot of selling of yourself and the football club in terms of what you are trying to achieve.

"I think we have done that extremely well, given the sort of competition we were up against for all three players."

The Magpies are also close to tying up the future of one of their established performers, with 21-year-old midfielder James Milner ready to sign a new long-term contract despite still having two years of his existing deal to run.

Milner was last summer on the verge of joining Aston Villa, where he had spent the previous season on loan, only to be recalled when Viduka's proposed move from Middlesbrough to St James' fell through.

Ironically, the two men will line up alongside each other for the new campaign - with the former Leeds forward having firmly established himself as a first-team regular on Tyneside.
