Pompey v Newcastle
Quote:
Michael Owen is the name on many people's lips ahead of Newcastle's trip to Portsmouth.
The forward made a scoring return in a practice match on Tuesday and his performance fuelled suggestions he could figure for Newcastle before the end of the season.
It has even been suggested Owen, sidelined since suffering a serious knee injury at last year's World Cup, could be named on the bench at Fratton Park on Saturday.
Manager Glenn Roeder has been keen to play down the possibility of Owen returning this weekend and the Magpies chief could well keep the forward's powder dry.
Newcastle enjoyed a decent Easter period to revive hopes they could push on and claim a spot in the Intertoto Cup, but a trip to Fratton Park is a daunting one - just ask Manchester United.
Aside from the talk surrounding Owen, Roeder has other fitness worries.
Shay Given is almost certain to miss the trip to the South Coast after damaging his groin during the 0-0 draw with Arsenal, with his place set to be taken by Steve Harper.
Kieron Dyer also limped off against Arsenal and is doubtful with a hamstring complaint, while Scott Parker (ankle), Antoine Sibierski (knee) are also struggling.
Shola Ameobi also scored in the midweek friendly against Gretna, but is set to be kept under wraps, although Craig Moore is expected to be passed fit.
Pompey suffered the highs and lows of football over Easter, as they beat Manchester United before losing to Watford and manager Harry Redknapp will be keen for his players to bounce back and revive their European charge.
Redknapp's main selection dilemma is who to field on the left-hand side of midfield as Matty Taylor has scored in Pompey's last two games, but the Fratton Park chief is contemplating restoring Niko Kranjcar to the starting XI.
David James has his eye on the Premiership clean sheet record and Redknapp may tinker with his defensive options after conceding four goals to Watford.

Redknapp unimpressed by Roeder
Quote:
Harry Redknapp believes Newcastle should be higher up the Premiership table with the players Glenn Roeder has at his disposal.
Redknapp will pit his wits against Roeder at Fratton Park on Saturday, with Portsmouth currently five points above The Magpies.
Roeder succeeded Redknapp as West Ham manager in 2001 but could not save them from relegation in 2003, and the Pompey boss has yet to be convinced by his record in management.
"When I left (West Ham) he took over and then suddenly they get relegated," said Redknapp.
"He's had a few other clubs like Gillingham and Watford, but West Ham were the best team ever to have been relegated in my opinion.
"Glenn has come back into management at Newcastle and got a good job.
"When Graeme Souness left, they put him in (caretaker) charge and after a couple of good results he got the job.
"But they have some great players there and looking at their squad they should be much higher.
"There is a lot of talent in the team, people like (Kieron) Dyer, (Scott) Parker, (James) Milner, Damien Duff. They should be right up there for what they have paid out."
Redknapp accepts that Newcastle have had rotten luck with injuries, but takes great satisfaction from the fact that Portsmouth have still had a better Premiership campaign.
"To be fair, they have had injuries throughout this season and when Michael Owen comes back it will be a big boost for them," he commented.
"But for us, being above teams like Newcastle, Blackburn and Manchester City is terrific. We certainly haven't broken the bank here."
David James, meanwhile, will be sporting a new clean-shaven look against Newcastle as he attempts to break David Seaman's record of 142 clean sheets in the Premiership.
The goalkeeper had initially vowed to keep his beard until the record was achieved, but conceding four at Watford, following late strikes by Fulham and Manchester United in previous games, has forced him into a rethink.
"It was beginning to get long and really wiry and I was beginning to look like Tom Hanks in Castaway," he said.

Tough match, Portsmouth usually do well at home.
Kenneth what do you think of this one ?

This is a must win game, if we are going to qualify for Europe. It will be difficult as you said; Pompey are good at home, they showed that against Man Utd.

I am a fellow Newcastle United supporter, if we want to succeed in any competitions we have to get rid of the fat, grumpy chairman Freddy Shepard.

Roeder can fuck off. The only good thing is that it should hasten his departure. As usual after we conceede a goal we play without idea, passion and ability. Roeder fucked up with the team selection as usually. When is the asshole going to understand that Martins can't play upfront alone. As soon Carroll (the only positive from the game) came of the bench the team played much better.
We seemed as though we've had the better of the 2nd half and a cracker from Taylor put us down. Can't wait for this season to end.
CONCLUSSION: SACK GLENN "THE CLUELESS" ROEDER!!!!

I saw the replay of the game yesterday and as you said, playing Martins alone up front is a waste.
Shame Newcastle lost, there's no hope for a European place now, if there ever was.

Our season never started, been a crap season, know we had injuries but we should be closer to top 6 than we currently are.
Can't wait until the season is over, looking at our fixtures (Chelsea, Reading, Blackburn and Watford) I can't see ut winning more this season cause the way we are playing.

Don't quit on your team yet mate, maybe Owen will return in time to score a few and win some matches until the season is over.
