Default Roeder: Squad needs changing

Quote:
Glenn Roeder is confident he will have the funds available to make the necessary changes to the Newcastle United squad in the summer.

The Magpies will finish another season without silverware after the Uefa Cup exit to AZ Alkmaar earlier this month.

Roeder feels it is time Newcastle launched a major offensive for trophies and believes the club have been guilty of signing too many players past their 'shelf life'.

"I just think it's about time we started to come out of hibernation and make some strides over the next couple of years," the Magpies boss told Sky Sports News.

"It doesn't happen overnight, and supporters and people shouldn't expect it to happen overnight - we've not won anything domestically since the year I was born in 1955, yet 52,000 people still come and watch us play.

"If you are to solve a problem, you have to admit there's a problem, and not be an ostrich and bury your head in the sand.

"The problem we have at the moment is we haven't the squad that is a Champions League squad and that will only change with continuity and the quality of player that comes in and wears the black and white shirt.

"We've brought too many players into this club that are past their shelf life, who make good back page headlines for a day and, oh dear, a few months into the season you suddenly realise they are past their shelf life.

"The squad does need to be changed, no doubt about it. It hasn't done well over the last few years. If we find the players you will see the results on the field next year.

"The chairman is aware of the players I'm looking at it and he hasn't said anything about 'Glenn, you shouldn't be looking at that quality of player'.

"I would assume the sort of player we would need to acquire that money will be made available."

Absolutely yes. Newcastle needs reinforcements and a better coach. I hope we see Newcastle at the top 5 next season.

We're getting linked to many players at the moment:

Razvan Rat, Joao Moutinho, Nani, Simao, Marco Caneira, Nelson, Luisao, Huntelaar, Babel and Sidwell.
