Onyewu is a decent defender. I remember a few big prem teams wanted him a few months ago. Would be a good addition to Newcastle, as they need some defenders.

If we do sign this guy at least it shows progress. Young, athletic, proven international player who still has a lot of potential. Sounds about the right kind of player to be signing to me.

Great defender, no doubt. What can you say about a defender that gets a Joga Bonito ads for NIke. Here's a documentary of him. Ouch!

Default Toon fears on Gooch move

Quote:
A nervy and anxious Glenn Roeder was left sweating on his planned loan moves as the transfer window closure loomed ominously closer today.

The Newcastle United boss was still waiting to hear from Standard Liege that all the paper work has been done which would allow American international defender Oguchi "Gooch" Onyewu to come on loan to St James' Park.

And so too was "Gooch" after he travelled to Tyneside over the weekend to talk to United and undergo a medical as he yearns for the chance to pull on the black-and-white shirt.

Roeder can only hope that the Belgian outfit do not pull the plug at the last minute because they are wary that United will not sign Onyewu in a permanent deal on at the end of the season.

This is exactly the same scenario with St Etienne and their 28-year-old Martinque-born striker Frederic Piquionne who they want to sell for e7m.

icNewcastle - Toon fears on Gooch move

Come on, sort it out! If we don't get any defenders we're fucked!

Default GOOCH MAKES TOON MOVE

Quote:
United States international Oguchi Onyewu has joined Newcastle United on loan for the rest of the season after passing a medical on Tuesday.

The Standard Liege stopper arrives to strengthen Glenn Roeder's injury ravaged squad at St James' Park in a deal first revealed by skysports.com.

'Gooch', as the defender is known, will help add some international experience to a Magpies defence that has taken on a youthful look in recent weeks due to a succession of injuries.

The former Metz man had been on the brink of joining North East rivals Middlesbrough in the summer before a move to The Riverside fell through.

After playing for his country in the World Cup, Onyewu was also linked with European luminaries such as Chelsea, Real Madrid, Internazionale, Milan and Marseille.

However he has now signed up to help Roeder's cause on Tyneside until the end of the current campaign.

I've never seen him play so i've no idea. He certainly has the stature and physique.

However, if he wants a permanent move he's got to do well pretty quickly; he's got a maximum of just 13 games in which to impress.

Newcastle United coughed up a significant loan fee for Standard Liege defender Oguchi Onyewu.
The Sunday Sun says the Belgian club insisted on the payment before turning down a £2 million-plus bid from Marseille for the giant centre-back.

Default Onyewu Disappointed With Debut Loss

Oguchi Onyewu made his Newcastle United bow on Saturday as the club lost 2-1 to Fulham.

The American defender arrived at St. James Park on loan from Standard Liege.

"I thought we defended well in the first-half, but it was disappointing to concede a goal so soon after half-time," Onyewu said of the match before downplaying the importance of his Magpies' debut.

"I was happy to make my debut and I was pleased with my performance, but the most important thing is the result and unfortunately that wasn't good."

Onyewu faced three of his American World Cup teammates in the match, with Fulham using Brian McBride -- who scored the winning goal, Carlos Bocanegra and Clint Dempsey.

"It was weird to play against my American friends because I'm so used to playing alongside them," said Onyewu, who almost joined Fulham during January.

"It was good to see them but I wish I was able to say that we'd won."

Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder was pleased with his new defending saying, "His voice can be heard and I am looking forward to hearing more of it. He is an intelligent guy and what I like about him is that he talks a lot."

He did just fine. Nothing more nothing less, just a dependable defender doing his job. Which is ok no complaints.

hopefully he is a big help... i do rate him as a player--big,strong, nice tackler, good in the air... may not be great positionally, but that will come with better coaching.

newcastle definitely needs help there... bramble could be the worst professional player on the planet! hahaha
