Default Newcastle v Charlton

Quote:
Newcastle and Charlton will be looking to build on confidence-boosting Carling Cup wins in midweek when they lock horns in the North East in front of the PremPlus cameras.

The Addicks are rooted to the foot of The Premiership, while Newcastle are just two places above the drop zone, but they both put league problems aside in midweek with excellent victories.

Newcastle were impressive in disposing of Portsmouth, with Giuseppe Rossi marking his full debut with a goal his all-round display merited.

The Manchester United loan star will be champing at the bit to secure a Premiership start and with Obafemi Martins carrying a groin problem and Shola Ameobi's hip a continuing cause for concern, the youngster may get his chance.

Martins limped out of the Pompey win at half time, having looked good in tandem with Rossi, and he will be given as late as possible to prove his fitness.

Antoine Sibierski has not been ruled out, while captain Scott Parker should return after being rested for the win over Pompey and Turkish schemer Emre will undergo a late fitness test on his back.

Kieron Dyer's 30-minute cameo boosted confidence on Tyneside and the returning star could again feature from the bench against The Addicks.

Charlton's battling win over Bolton in midweek eased the pressure on manager Iain Dowie, but they face no easy task as their record at St James' Park is poor.

The South East Londoners' last win on Tyneside came back in 2000 but Dowie will be looking for his players to put Newcastle's suspect defence to the test.

Dowie's wide men Jerome Thomas and Dennis Rommedahl looked good against Watford at the weekend, but the former picked up a hip injury in midweek and faces a late fitness test.

Darren Bent seems certain to return to the side provided his leg problem has healed, while Amdy Faye, Andy Reid and Rommedahl are all expected to shake off minor niggles.

Extreamly important match. Only three points is good enough.

out of interest has luque started a league game yet this season??

unbelievable that hes not being given a chance to adjust despite having paid so much for him, being short on strikers and being on poor form...

i hope rossi has a good game

not a particularly good game....

message of the day was duff needs a right foot, he could have had a couple if he could use it....

rossi was alright, had some good moments where he turned defenders and a couple of good shots/passes....

carson had a great game too.

Rossi should have scored when he hit the bar. That was the chance of the game.Carson had some good saves.Maybe Liverpool should have kept him and let Reina leave the club instead. He gives the defence more safety.

I know you all Magpies are dissapointed with the result and expected a win.I can comfort you that Given could make a return next month against Manchester City.Shay Given is maybe the most popular player for you after Shearer retired from football.I'm sad for you that Dyer again got injured just right after he did a comeback in the midweek against Portsmouth. Not him or the fans deserved that.

Dowie: Luck was with us

Quote:
Iain Dowie felt his Charlton Athletic side enjoyed a change of luck at Newcastle United.

The Addicks headed up to the North East bottom of The Premiership after seven defeats in nine games.

But a battling performance from Charlton secured a first away point of the season courtesy of a 0-0 draw.

Dowie believes his team enjoyed some good fortune during the first half and was happy with the second-half display.

However, the Addicks boss was also quick to concede that his players did not do enough to merit just a second victory of the campaign.

"We rode our luck in the first half, but we have had many a game where the luck has gone against us," Dowie told PremPlus.

"In the second half we were more resilient and had arguably the best chance of the second half.

"We crept into the game and started to restrict Newcastle to a lot of direct play, but we did not play well enough to win.

"We were not good enough on the ball."

I think Charlton deserves a little luck because that have been absent this season.

Booed off again - every home game this season bar Wigan? Getting majorly sick of this.

Someone needs to explain to Roeder what substitutions are and how to use them because its just getting ridiculous. TACTICS are vital....unfortunately our manager doesn't have any...

If we continue like this, not even beat the worst team in the league at home, we will relegate.

The reason why Duff is given up by Chelsea is because he is not up to standards. Good engine but no end product whatsoever. Should have had a penalty though.

Four thousands seats were not used in this match. 0-0 against the weakest team in PL so far at St.James is not good enough.

Who shall score the goals?

And why are we always playing an approved first-half, but in the second we're totally shit...?

An expert said once that he didn't think Newcastle were good enough trained, and many laugh about his comments, but I think he actually has a point.

N'castle need a good manager with experience right now to save this season.

Parker: Magpies fear the drop

Quote:
Newcastle United captain Scott Parker has admitted he fears The Magpies are already embroiled in a relegation battle after a poor start to The Premiership season.

Saturday's 0-0 draw with bottom club Charlton did little to alleviate the pressure on manager Glenn Roeder as a run of six league games without a win has left the North East side just two points above the drop zone.

Newcastle's recent form is in contrast to the productive spell Roeder enjoyed when taking over from Graeme Souness last season, and supporters on Tyneside have been growing restless in recent weeks with chairman Freddy Shepherd bearing the brunt of criticism.

Whilst Parker insists that the squad are putting in the requisite effort, the former Charlton man has conceded that the inability to transform performances into points means The Magpies are already looking nervously over their shoulder at the bottom three.

"The performances are certainly there but the points aren't," Parker admitted. "It's a bit of a worry but we keep going.

"That was the best we have played for a long while and I include last year in that.

"If the game had ended up 4-0 everyone would have said 'deservedly so' but that's the way it is going for us at the moment.

"Are we in a relegation fight? Yes of course, that is the reality.

"We are near the bottom of the table and it isn't looking good.

"We could go through the season saying we are playing well and not winning games, but that wouldn't keep us in the league.

"We are not going to kid ourselves, we are in the results business."

Parker also admitted that the St James' Park outfit are suffering from a lack of strength in attack after the retirement of club hero Alan Shearer at the end of last season.

Giuseppe Rossi, Obafemi Martins and Antoine Sibierski were all brought in before the transfer window closed, but the Magpies skipper insists the club are still feeling the absence of their former captain.

"Obviously the legend that Alan is, you are going to miss him," Parker added.

"But we have the players in the squad who can help with that.

"When the transfer window shut we knew we were light in the striker department and it is showing, but that's the hand we have been dealt. We have to get on with it."

With the pressure building on Tyneside, Magpies supremo Shepherd has called for a quick improvement in the club's form after being the subject of fans' criticism.

"We have a lot of quality in our squad and have spent good money," said Shepherd.

"They have to repay our faith by producing the goods.

"Our points tally needs to be improved quickly.

"It's early days and a couple of wins can still make a massive difference to our position."

Source: http://home.skysports.com

I'm sure Newcastle will not struggle in the relegation battle this season. They are a strong home team and you can't think you are a potensial relegation team just because you didn't beat Charlton at home.Newcastle had enough chances to win.

Many points to fight for and I'm certain Newcastle will pick up enough points in the up-coming matches so that will not be a battle to secure play in the Premiership. The goals will come in the league.

Roeder just can't cut it now that the lift from Souness leaving has gone, he's on a par with Souness when it comes to being clusless. I predicted that we'd finish between 8th and 12th before the season got under way, now I think we're on for our lowest Premiership finish, I can't see us finishing as high as
14th with this setup at the club.

The bottom team have just earned a point away from home, something they've been unable to do until now. If Sheff Utd get the first goal against us then I can see us getting beat.

Shepherd Out
