Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has vowed to bring in players who will strengthen the team.
With the summer fast approaching, the transfer rumour mill is heading into full swing and Newcastle are being linked with a host of players.
Roeder has targets in mind, notably central defenders and a striker, but is only looking to sign players who will be capable of challenging for a first-team place.
"We definitely have plans, we have players in mind that I'd like to bring to the club that will strengthen the team," said Roeder.
"I don't like to make signings to add to the squad, I like to make signings who I think will be first-team players straight away."
Although having targets in mind, Roeder is refusing to divulge the names on his wish list.
"It would be wrong of any manager to tell you the names of players they are targeting, but we are targeting three or four players and if I get them it will make us stronger next season."
Roeder is unlikely to have a massive amount to spend this summer and he is aware that a number of the present squad may have to be moved on if he is to land his targets.
"If we manage to get the ones we want, a few players will have to leave to make it financially viable," added Roeder.
"We have to keep an eye on the club's finances, but if we can bring in the players I want they would be terrific signings."
Defenders are high on Roeder's wish list, but young full back Peter Ramage (pictured) has been assured of his future on Tyneside.
It had been claimed that Premiership new-boys Watford were looking to sign the 21-year-old, but Roeder has no plans to move him on.
"I saw the speculation linking Rammy with Watford in the newspapers this morning, but that's all it is - speculation," Roeder told the club's website.
"I certainly wouldn't encourage anyone to come in for Peter, he showed last season that he can do a job for us and he has a future here with us at Newcastle United."
who'd u reckon come in, seeing as we need new defenders and a striker, big players like who?
