Boumsong set to land italian job
Italian giants Roma, Lazio and Fiorentina are believed to locked in tug-of-war for Newcastle outcast Jean-Alain Boumsong.
Boumsong was an £8million capture when former Magpies boss Graeme Souness signed him from Scottish outfit Rangers in the 2005 January transfer window.
But he failed to live up to expectations and after a disastrous run of form and the exit of Souness from St James' Park, he has fallen firmly out of favour for a starting role.
Caretaker boss Glenn Roeder, widely expected to be given the manager's job on a permanent basis, has preferred a centre-back partnership of Craig Moore and Titus Bramble.
And that preferrence has been rewarded by a massive improvement in results, which has seen the Magpies soar up to seventh place.
The 26-year-old Boumsong seems surplus to requirements at St James' Park and is expected to leave in the summer.
A transfer fee of around £4million will be enough to land the Frenchman's services, and he is also believed to have already travelled to both Rome and Tuscany for talks with his suitors.

Good news for the club and the player if true. He'd probably be decent again back on the continent.

I don't see how the numbers are decreasing though.
In fact I doubt you'd find as many top class defenders in England or Spain.

You probably wouldn't but how many of those will have retired in the next couple of seasons, most are into their 30's

That's not a major issue though because player in Italy can play for longer due to the slow tempo of the game. Most defenders could play well into their late 30's if they really wanted to.

Chelsea star a target?
Quote:
Newcastle are reportedly ready to make a £4.5million bid for Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.
The Icelandic international is being linked with a summer exit from Stamford Bridge.
Gudjohnsen's father, who also acts as his agent, confirmed he was holding crunch talks with Chelsea last week about his son's future at the Premiership champions.
The People claim that Toon boss Glenn Roeder is ready to make the former Bolton ace his first signing of the summer.

I'm not as keen on Gudjonsen now as 1-2 years ago, I think he's started to stagnate at Chelsea.
As for Neill, not sure, Carr is a lot better going forward.

I'm still positive when it comes to Gudjohnson. If they sign him cheap and use him together with Owen on top, I think they can be a dangerous duo.
Better than Shola and Chopra and we know that he can fit in, in English football.

Ashton?
West Ham United striker Dean Ashton has emerged as a major target for Newcastle United.
Newly-appointed Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder is ready to raid his old club for the powerful centre-forward, who has drawn comparisons with Alan Shearer.
The Daily Express says Toon won't flinch over demands of £12 million for the youngster from the Hammers board.

Yes, Dean Ashton is welcome to tyneside. Maybe not as regular, but a great player to have in the squad.
