Newcastle United winger Albert Luque is set to be sold - only months after arriving on Tyneside from Deportivo La Coruna.

The Mirror says Luque has had a nightmare time on the Tyne since joining in a £9.5million deal from Deportivo La Coruna but he could be sensationally rescued by either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Barca have made a shock inquiry and would take their former target if Newcastle are reasonable on the price. And agents working for Real are also checking on Luque's health and welfare - with a possible swap on the cards. They have right back Michel Salgado and even Toon old boy Jonathan Woodgate as potential makeweights.

Jean-Alain Boumsong is being linked with a move to Marseille as reports in the North East claim Graeme Souness would like to re-sign Jonathan Woodgate.

Newcastle United will no doubt be involved in the January sales and Real Madrid stopper Woodgate, who has been severely hampered by injuries in the Spanish capital, is reportedly an ambitious target for the Tyneside outfit.

It has been suggested that Woodgate and Albert Luque could swap clubs in a loan arrangement between the two clubs, who enjoy a very good working relationship.

Woodgate has always maintained his determination to prove himself at El Santiago Bernabeu, while Souness and chairman Freddy Shepherd have insisted Luque is staying put.

Boumsong, meanwhile, is rumoured to be unsettled in the North East and his mother, who also manages his interests, has been spotted at Marseille recently, sparking talk in the French media that a move could be on the cards.

I won't be sad if he goes, but the validity of this is unproven.

Graeme Souness has intimated that he could move for Danny Murphy should Lee Bowyer leave St James' Park in the transfer window.

With several deals taking shape across The Premiership, the futures of both Murphy and Bowyer appear to be far from certain and could be decided within the next few weeks.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley has recently come out to express his ire at how media speculation has been mounting with regards to Murphy, with Newcastle and Manchester City having been strongly linked with the talented midfielder.

Murphy enjoyed a fine start to the campaign, with talk of an England recall resurfacing, but in recent weeks - during Charlton's slump - has been reduced on occasion to a place on the bench.

Talk had been that the player was hankering after a move back north but whilst this has been dismissed by Curbishley, Souness has now conceded that Murphy could be an option should Bowyer quit the North East.

''If, and it's a big if, Bowyer leaves then we will be one short in midfield,'' said Souness.

''Danny Murphy is a quality player, who has been in and is on the fringes of the England squad.''

If Murphy does make a move to Newcastle then ironically, Bowyer could be his replacement - as former club Charlton have always maintained a strong interest in the former Valley favourite.

However, Portsmouth are also keen to bring tenacity to their midfield, courtesy of Bowyer, and it could yet prove to be a two-way fight for his services.

Meanwhile, Souness has played down talk of a move for Marseille's Abdoulaye Meite, claiming that if he does move for a defender then he will most probably buy British.

Murphy is struggling with a hamstring injury, will fit in nicely!!

I'd welcome the move he would be perfect with his through balls to Owen and they know each other well from their Liverpool days.

My worry would be his wages because when Emre and Parker are back they'll be first choice IMO. Last thing we need is another player on the bench who's on £40k a week. Murphy is a good player but will he accept a lesser role than he has now? I know Emre will get injuries but players dont wanna rely on other players being injured so they can play.

Newcastle are believed to have offered a trial to French defender Yoann Lachor.

The Lens ace is expected to spend a few days training with the Newcastle squad this week so that Magpies boss Graeme Souness can cast an eye over him.

Souness is keen to add new faces to his squad as his options have been decimated by a crippling injury list this term.

The Magpies have struggled defensively this term and Souness has made defensive reinforcements his top priority in this month's transfer window.

Lachor is thought to be keen on a move away from Lens after dropping down the pecking order at Stade Felix-Bollaert.

The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to England before with Lachor claiming in November that he had held talks with Birmingham.

However, Newcastle could be set to steal a march on their rivals and bring the defender to St James' Park if he impresses during his trial period.

YOANN Lachor has returned to France after spending two days training with Newcastle United on Tyneside.

The left-back, currently with Ligue 1 outfit RC Lens, arrived at the Magpies' training base on Monday morning but has now made the return journey across the Channel.

Commenting on Lachor, who will be 30 next week, boss Graeme Souness told nufc.co.uk: "He did well in the short time he was here, but we have a couple of other things to look at as well before we make any final decisions."

Newcastle are one of a number of European clubs being linked with Egyptian captian Ahmed Hassan.

The 30-year-old has made over 100 appearances for his country and was the linchpin of the victorious Egyptian side in the recent African Cup of Nations, winning the Player of the Tournament award.

The midfielder was also part of the national squad that won the tournament in 1998, scoring one of the goals in the 2-0 final victory over South Africa.

Hassan currently plays for Besiktas in Turkey, but is out of contract in the summer and egyptianplayers.com suggests that the Magpies are considering bringing him to England in the summer.

However, Newcastle would face competition from across Europe with Fulham, Werder Bremen, Marseille, Panathinaikos, Dynamo Kiev and Vestel Manisaspor of Turkey all said to be interested in the player.

Newcastle United are set to make a £7 million pound loss on Hugo Viana as they agree to sell him for £1.5 million.

Although Freddy Shepherd refused to comment, it seems in Spain that a deal has been agreed with Valencia for the on-loan Portuguese international.



Viana was signed by Sir Bobby Robson for £8.5 million after a lot of good press surrounding the player, but he was just not tough enough for the English style of play.

Newcastle United earned £87.1m (128.9 mill. €) last season according to Deloitte.

They have some outcome off course, but 12th in Europe isn't that bad. Freddie Shep has also some money avaiable to N'castle, and they have some great sponsors in the back too. That St.James.Park is filled up every match is also positive.

I think Newcastle will survive when it comes to the economic part in the future.
