Newcastle have moved a step closer to beating Chelsea to the signing of Real Betis ace Joaquin.


The Spanish international winger has revealed that Toon ace Albert Luque has been asked to spy on him when the pair meet up for internationals - and report back to Graeme Souness.

Chelsea had been favourites to land Joaquin while Liverpool have also been linked with the talented wide man.

But now he has told The News Of The World that he'd love to supply the bullets for Michael Owen on Tyneside.

He said: "I've been told Newcastle have asked Luque for reports on me.

"That is good news as far as I'm concerned - I hope he told them nice things.

"It would be beautiful to have him as a team-mate and play alongside somebody like Owen who is one of the best strikers in the world."

Joaquin is sure to be one of the hottest properties around in the January transfer window, and his departure has probably been hastened by Betis' early exit from the Champions League.

at the start of the season he was worth over 20 million,betis were expectd to be fighting for europeon places,but they have been poor and are 19th in la liga and in major debt,something tells me that his price tag will have decreased largely.i think betis will be forced to listen to offers around the 10 million area now they are in this financial situation.

Newcastle are back in the hunt to sign Chelsea defender Robert Huth while Stephen Carr is being linked with a move away from the club.
Graeme Souness has long been linked with a move for Huth and he held talks with the Blues following the game between the two sides at Stamford Bridge last month.
The gaffer also mentioned Wayne Bridge and Glen Johnson during his chat with Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho but a move for German international Huth looks the most likely at this time.

The German international looks certain to leave Chelsea in January as he goes in search of first-team football ahead of the World Cup finals in his homeland next summer.

Souness will be in the hunt to land him but he will face competition from Aston Villa and Bayern Munich who are also keen on the talented central defender who is well and truly out of the first-team picture at Chelsea.

Meanwhile, reports in Ireland claim that Carr could be shipped out by Souness in order to make way for new blood. The 29-year-old has failed to hit off since arriving from Tottenham and the injury-prone defender has lost his place in the side to Peter Ramage.

I'm not convinced by Huth.
Carr's an average right back. nothing more, nothing less.
i'd prefer someone better, but there are other areas of the squad that need addressing.

im not sure we are going to sell robbie tbh, but we could loan him.

he is capable of excellent dominating performances, but he will make mistakes and that really isnt what you are looking for tbh.

i think huth has the ability to be as good as someone like mellberg though.

Former club Portsmouth want to take Newcastle United's Amady Faye back on loan in next month's transfer window.
But Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric will be told to pay up if returning manager Harry Redknapp wants to take Faye back to Fratton Park.
United chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "If Portsmouth or anyone else for that matter want any of our players in January then they will have to put their money on the table."

If Pompey are to pay,I reckon we will get our two million back and replace him with bouba diop or ruben baraja

Newcastle are being linked with a January swoop for Roma forward Antonio Cassano after the player turned down a new deal.
The 22-year-old will be leaving Roma on the cheap next summer after saying he will not sign a new deal to stay with the club and that has sparked a scramble for his services.
Inter Milan are thought to be keen and Newcastle have now been added to the list of club's said to be tracking the player. Roma could look to cash in when the transfer window opens and a move to the Premiership is not out of the question.

Graeme Souness should be given more funds to strengthen his ranks and a move for Cassano is a possibility.

Joaquin is not impossible. I don't think none of the big guns wants to sign him in nearer future either.

Newcastle and Shep have always some money to spend, and Joaquin himself is keen on Tyneside and to play on the same team as Owen.

It would be fantastic if we got him,but I'm not sure we need him. We have Solano and Dyer.
Our defence is our main problem, a new CB and a LB should be top priority.
And ahead of a new right winger, we should go for a striker.
