Ben Foster is top quality, but because he's young, SAF bought Kucscak, when Foster was very capable of being understudy to VDS.

Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder is thought to be the latest Premiership manager to express an interest in Southampton wonderkid Gareth Bale.
The 17-year-old left-back is performing well at Championship level, and became Wales' youngest ever goalscorer when he netted in Saturday's 5-1 thumping by Slovakia.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool have all been credited with an interest in the player, and Roeder is also thought to be pondering a January bid.
Southampton say they have no intention of allowing Bale to leave, but with so many Premiership clubs interested, they may find it difficult to retain his services.

Glenn Roeder is lining up Steve Sidwell as a January replacement for Emre.

Turkish star Emre is keen on a move away from St James' Park as his wife has not settled in the North East.

23-year-old Sidwell, who came close to joining Manchester City in the summer, is in the final year of his Reading contract and has turned in some impressive displays in the Premiership so far this season.

He said: "I have been conscious that buyers could be watching me at any point, so I am always trying to impress."

Newcastle United are monitoring Aalborg youngster Rasmus Wurtz after his Danish club admitted they must sell the midfielder in January.
"There is only one window left for us to get a good price for him," admitted AaB director Lynge Jacobsen.

Newcastle were linked with Wurtz over the summer.

"My goal is to move abroad," Wurtz told BT. "I am ready to take the next step in my career. "

Wales international Danny Gabbidon has emerged as a January transfer window target for Premiership rivals Newcastle United.
The centre-back has impressed since his arrival from Cardiff City in 2005 and is seen as the ideal man to shore up the Magpies' shaky defence.
Alan Pardew is sure to resist any bid tabled by the Tyneside club and the Hammers are unlikely to field any enquiry while a takeover is still in the offing at Upton Park.

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder is keen to bolster his back-line as a poor start to the season has once again highlighted the deficiencies of Titus Bramble.

Manchester City's Sylvain Distin is also a target for Roeder and he may have more luck in landing the Frenchman, as he is due to fall out of contract next summer having snubbed terms on an extended stay at Eastlands.

Robert keen on Toon return

Laurent Robert has declared his desire for a sensational return to Newcastle now Graeme Souness has long since departed the North East outfit.

The talented-but-temperamental Frenchman's time at St James' Park was often one of controversy, with the spats he endured with Souness notorious and all too frequent.

Since ending his association with Newcastle the wide man's time in football has been punctuated with ill conceived moves across the continent, as spells at Portsmouth, Benfica and now, Levante, have failed to yield positive fruit.

With this is mind, Robert has called on current incumbent Glenn Roeder to manufacture his return to black and white stripes, eager for a reunion with the club in which he delighted and frustrated in equal measures.

"I really enjoyed my time in English football with Newcastle and would love to come back if Mr Shepherd would have me," he said.

"When I think of Newcastle, there is only one word - fantastic.

"Souness was the reason I left Newcastle. I do not know Glenn Roeder but have talked to some former team-mates and they tell me he is a good manager to work for."

Meanwhile, Titus Bramble has vowed to continue his mini-renaissance after being recalled by Roeder following what was a miserable run of form in Newcastle's first team.

Bramble has impressed in Newcastle's last two games in keeping consecutive clean sheets against Fenerbahce and Charlton.

"Sometimes there is unfair criticism, but fair criticism you have to take on the chin," said Bramble.

"My aim is to keep them quiet by keeping clean sheets. We are paid to keep clean sheets and in the last two games we have done that."

When he was top of his game at Newcastle, he was amazing. If he gave 100% in every game, I'd have him back in a flash. Too bad he rarely does give 100%.

Arsenal are ready to swoop for Newcastle's French winger Charles N'Zogbia in the January transfer window.

The £5million-rated left winger, 20, has had his first-team chances held back by Damien Duff's arrival at St James' Park.

N'Zogbia has made 54 starts for the Geordies, who need to raise cash and lower the wage bill before buying a striker in the new year.

Navarro in Magpies link

Newcastle are considering a move for Valencia defender David Navarro, according to the player's agent.

The Magpies were linked with the 26-year-old last summer but are now set to renew their interest.

Reports in the Spanish press indicate that Navarro could be heading to The Premiership in January for a fee of around €5 million (£3.3 million)

Agent Maria Orobigt said: "Newcastle are searching for a central defender and have several men on their list.

"But still there are several aspects to be considered and I personally view it as a very complicated exit."

Navarro has not been a regular in Valencia's starting XI this season but is still attracting attention from across the continent.

Deportivo La Coruna have questioned Valencia about his availability and are rumoured to be very keen on signing him.

Distin set for return?

Newcastle are ready to snatch Sylvain Distin back from Manchester City in a cut-price deal in January.

The Magpies hope to capitalise on the fact that Distin is out of contract next summer to land him for a knock-down fee in the new year.

Although City have offered to make him one of the highest-paid players in the club's history, Distin has refused to sign a new deal - losing the club captaincy as a result.

And the 28-year-old centre-back would be keen to re-join Newcastle, despite having turned down the chance to sign for them after a loan spell on Tyneside in the 2001/02 season.
