Blackburn target Wael Gomaa has undergone a trial with Newcastle in a bid to earn a Premiership contract.
Rovers manager Mark Hughes was thought to have been running the rule over the imposing central defender this week, but Goma underwent a St James's Park training session on Tuesday instead.
The Egypt international is confident of impressing Magpies boss Glenn Roeder, and earning a dream move to England prior to Thursday's transfer deadline.
"I trained with Newcastle's first team and put on a good show," the 31-year-old told FilGoal.com
Roeder has identified defence as an area of his team which requires strengthening and the Al Ahli stopper could fit the bill.
Gomaa will train again with Newcastle on Wednesday, before returning to Egypt to join the national side who are preparing for an African Cup of Nations qualifier.

James Milner's proposed return to Aston Villa appears to be off after he was summoned back to Newcastle United.
The England Under-21 international had been given permission to travel to Villa Park to discuss a transfer.
Milner, who spent last term on loan in the Midlands, seemed to be closing on a permanent move to Villa.
But Newcastle have confirmed that the young winger has been recalled to St James' Park and that talks have been broken off.
The 20-year-old made 27 Premiership appearances for Villa last term and former boss David O'Leary want to hang on to Milner.
O'Leary's successor Martin O'Neill was similarly keen on the exciting wide man, but Magpies boss Glenn Roeder appears to have undergone a change of heart

Why Woody joined M'Boro. Fair reason IMO.
"I've always wanted to play for my hometown team, always been an ambition," Woodgate told the Guardian. "My father's a fan, my family are fans, my friends are fans and I'm a fan. Ask Alan Shearer, ask Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard - he didn't go to Chelsea - ask them about playing for your hometown team. I'm no different."
"I went to every game at Ayresome Park until I joined Leeds as a schoolboy. I had to be ballboy and stuff at Leeds, so it stopped. But I then had a season ticket at the Riverside, went to the first match there - Liverpool, 3-3, Ravanelli hat-trick."
"I used to love it, went to every single home game. I'd go to Ayresome Park with my dad and my uncle, used to go all the time. I'll always remember the atmosphere, the Holgate. My granddad lived round the corner from Ayresome Park, on Brompton Street, my Dad was born on Brompton Street and grew up there. It's in the blood, I'm a Boro fan, I love Middlesbrough and the dream has always been to play for Middlesbrough. I first went when I was six, and I was at the game at Hartlepool, that game. Twenty years on, I'm here."

Newcastle move for Bolton keeper Walker
Quote:
Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder is chasing Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Ian Walker.
Roeder hopes to sign Walker on an emergency loan after an injury suffered by No1 keeper Shay Given at West Ham on Saturday.
|
Probably the ideal situation for me would be Harper starting every game until Shay is back, allowing Krul to be on the bench, and maybe even getting a run as sub against the likes of Tallinn. Trouble is, that's a big if, as I'm not sure I'd want Krul starting a game. If we leave it and hope for the best then chances are we'd be fine, but all it takes is one knock and we're at panic stations.

Hedman linked with shock Newcastle move
Quote:
Could Magnus Hedman be set for a move to Newcastle United Football Club?
The Magpies are in the market for a goalkeeper to act as cover for Steve Harper, with regular number one shot-stopper Shay Given currently sidelined with a stomach injury.
Hedman actually quit football in the summer of 2005 after leaving Celtic, yet the 33-year-old has revealed he has an option to make a comeback with a top club, believed to be Newcastle.
"I have got an enquiry from a top club. It feels flattering," Hedman told Expressen. "I have talked to the goalkeeping coach and he believes it takes three weeks before I am fit for the fight.
"I don't want to tell the name due to my respect for the club. They want an experienced keeper as back-up and it is hard to get players without a contract.
|
If true I hope he never ever plays. I don't like him. Pretty arrogant and thinks he's best.
Surely there's a better keeper who is down the pecking order at another club rather than signing a free agent.
There's usually a good reason why they don't have a club.

Hedman has confirmed he will stay in Sweden. He was offered a contract which would expire in January, but the contract was to short for him.
Phew......

Toon in Wattereus swoop
Quote:
Newcastle United are hoping to bring former Rangers keeper Ronald Wattereus to St James' Park on a short-term contract until the transfer window in January.
Glenn Roeder needs another goalkeeper while Shay Given recovers from his stomach injury - and he has turned to Wattereus (pictured), who is back in his native Holland after leaving Ibrox in the summer.
But Wattereus's 18-year-old countryman Tim Krul - rated highly by Roeder but not considered ready for first-team football - will still be on the bench for Thursday's UEFA Cup first round, second leg tie against Levadia Tallinn.
Reports coming out of Scandinavia suggested that retired former Coventry City Swedish keeper Magnus
Hedman was a target of United's but Wattereus - and former Fulham keeper Jaroslav Drobny - were the only contenders once Roeder and goalkeeping coach Terry Gennoe had sifted through dozens of names put forward.
Wattereus is a twice Dutch Eredivisie winner with PSV Eindhoven and the 36-year-old also won the Scottish Premier League at Rangers.
Wattereus - who had made two Carling Cup appearances for Kevin Keegan's Manchester City - arrived at Ibrox in January last year, and played a big part in Rangers' title triumph that season.
The former Holland international was a regular last season but was not offered a new deal.
Czech Drobny was signed by Fulham as a replacement for Edwin van der Saar last summer following his move to Manchester United.
A pre-season injury, however, prevented the former Panionios man establishing himself at Craven Cottage and he left in the summer.

Krul is more than capable of taking the job if something happens to Harper. It's only for six weeks, and the chance of both Given and Harper being injured is minimal.
