Dyer's timely boost
Quote:
He has lost Shay Given for the foreseeable future but there was some welcome news for Glenn Roeder last night as Kieron Dyer moved a significant step closer to making his long-awaited Premiership comeback.
And the injury-plagued Newcastle midfielder is confident his troubles are finally behind him, with Dyer having told his manager that a specially-tailored rehabilitation programme has left him in better condition than he has been for several years.
The news that Given is expected to miss several weeks of first-team football having undergone an abdominal operation was tempered to a certain degree by Dyer's progress on the club's training pitches.
A player who has not featured since United's 4-1 win at the Stadium of Light on April 17 has resumed work with Roeder's senior squad and is closing in on a return to action in a black-and-white shirt.
"I have never heard such a positive Kieron Dyer," said the Newcastle boss of a player who has completed his detailed rehabilitation programme outside the North-East under the supervision of a team of leading specialists and fitness experts. "In the way that he has been talking he seems to be very happy with the way things are going. You can see it in how bright his eyes are and in the look on his face.
"Kieron feels that he is physically fitter now than he has been for years and things are positive. He is back with us again now and it's so, so important - I can't stress the importance enough - that he stays fit this season."
Dyer travelled to London with United's first-team squad at the weekend and the stirring manner in which Roeder's team beat West Ham 2-0 at Upton Park cannot have failed to have whetted his appetite.
Previous comebacks have been shortlived and Roeder has given Dyer additional time to work on his fragile fitness this time around in an attempt to ensure he does not suffer further recurrences. It looks an astute move given the implications should the player encounter further problems.
"We have given him a lot of extra time this time to regain full fitness, we felt this was the road to go down," said the United boss. "At the moment it has proved to be correct because he is training flat out at the moment and I mean flat out. He's right up to sprinting speed and has been for the last couple of weeks. He's in great shape and is very happy with himself. He's twisting and turning and we will have to assess where we are in terms of bringing him back in."
Although Dyer is making rapid progress, his return to Premiership action will not be rushed and Roeder is keen to see the 27-year-old in action in a behind-closed-doors game at the club's training ground before he even considers including him in his first-team plans. That could take place sooner rather than later, although all risks will be minimised.
"Kieron feels extremely fit and he can't wait to be involved again," added the United boss. "But I can't say when he will play again. It's important that he has got himself to the level of fitness where he is doing everything in terms of running, he is hammering it every day. But what we need to see happen is for Kieron to play a number of games, one after another, before we can feel comfortable that he is completely over the problems that have hindered him for so long."
Although a peripheral figure at St James's Park in recent times, Dyer remains important to the United cause and, with Shola Ameobi's fitness problems continuing, his return will be timely when it comes. Ameobi is still troubled by a long-standing hip complaint and, having admitted last night that he needs an operation to repair the problem, it seems that it will only be a matter of time before the striker breaks down.
"It is deteriorating," said a player who must be a doubt for tomorrow's trip to Anfield. "I just need to see how long I can go before I need an operation. We will just have to wait and see how long I can keep going."

A fit Kieron Dyer combining with the pace of Duff and Martins, beware defences..

Shola in Euro fitness boost
Shola Ameobi should be available for Newcastle United's two matches this week against Levadia Tallinn and Manchester United after a scan showed that his ankle injury was nothing serious.
This was about the only good news coming out of St James' Park today as United have been badly hit by injuries and suspensions. At Old Trafford on Sunday they end a run of seven games in just 23 days.
Hopes that Nobby Solano could be available for Manchester United this weekend look to have evaporated with the Peruvian not expected to be back until after the international break next month.
And Glenn Roeder admitted today United's medical team were not sure when Damien Duff would be back after he picked up a thigh strain in training on Friday which kept him out of Sunday's draw with Everton at St James' Park.
Roeder told me today: "Shola has had his scan on his ankle and nothing came up and it is feeling a lot better which is good news."
However, Ameobi still has the on-going problem with his hip and it remains to be seen whether he figures on Thursday night in the UEFA Cup first round, second leg with Tallinn.
What complicates the striker situation is the fact the Seppe Rossi, who looked so lively in his 15-minute spell as substitute against Everton, has been stopped from playing for United in the UEFA Cup by Sir Alex Ferguson and he is barred from turning out against Manchester United on Sunday under Premiership rules.
On Duff, Roeder added: "Damien's absence will not be a long one but we don't know yet whether he will be fit to play on Thursday or Sunday.
"He is due to go off on international duty with the Republic of Ireland next week but he has to prove his fitness with us first.
"And it looks as though Nobby will not be ready to come back from his hamstring injury until after the international break in the middle of October when we play Bolton Wanderers at St James' Park."
Kieron Dyer has an outside chance of returning in this game but at the moment Roeder is not thinking any further than this week's matches with Levadia and Manchester United.
Roeder has Titus Bramble and Celestine Babayaro suspended for the trip to Old Trafford but both can play on Thursday night.
United hope that Babayaro's slight groin strain will not stop him from playing but I expect Steven Taylor to come back at the heart of the defence against Levadia.

Freak Eye Injury Setback For Star
Quote:
KIERON Dyer has suffered a freak training ground eye injury that will see the Newcastle United ace back on the sidelines for a short while.
The fleet-footed Magpies star made his long-awaited comeback as a substitute in Wednesday's 3-0 Carling Cup win over Portsmouth at St. James' Park, and was looking forward to another Gallowgate run-out in Saturday's visit of Charlton Athletic.
But the England man's hopes were cruelly dashed by an unfortunate accident while training on Friday morning.
Manager Glenn Roeder told nufc.co.uk: "Kieron took a knock to his left eye on Friday morning in what can only be described as a freak accident.
"We immediately took him to see a specialist and his advice was that he needs to rest and not to take part in any contact training for at least two weeks.
"Kieron doesn't deserve such wretched luck to happen little more than a day after getting back out on the pitch against Portsmouth, when for 30 minutes he showed the kind of electric pace and ability that we know he's capable of.
"It's such cruel luck to be robbed of his services, but we've just got to stand up and be counted and move forward in a positive way, starting with Charlton on Saturday."

I don't know wheter to laugh or cry. It's fucking unbelievable. Feel bad for him.
This sems to be so typical of Dyer!

Injury-hit squad gives Roeder a headache
Quote:
Newcastle United will have to make do with their paper-thin and injury-hit squad until the transfer window in January.
It's a fair bet that Michael Owen will not play again this season and neither will Shola Ameobi once he has an operation on his hip in the next couple of weeks.
United also currently have Shay Given, Emre, Kieron Dyer, Oba Martins and Antoine Sibierski on the treatment table, while Albert Luque is out in the cold and Olivier Bernard is struggling to get anywhere near the standard required for the Premiership.
Both Stephen Carr and Scott Parker have been carrying injuries while Steven Taylor was not risked in Saturday's starting line-up because of a groin problem.
And Nicky Butt was unable to go up and receive his man-of-the- match award from the sponsors on Saturday night because he could hardly move his neck after a first-half collision.
It's a difficult situation for Glenn Roeder to say the least but has no plans to bring in any player who is out of contract.
This is something Martin O'Neill did at Aston Villa when he brought his former Celtic striker Chris Sutton to Villa Park.
Indeed, Roeder told IcNewcastle today: "There are no superstars waiting around the corner to come in and help us. If players are out of contract and have not been snapped up by some club there is obviously a reason for this."
Roeder is already being linked with players in the January window, but at the moment this is a million miles away.

Yet another injury blow
Third choice keeper Tim Krul could be facing a lengthy spell out having injured his knee in the warm-up before the victory at Watford.
The Dutch shot-stopper, who performed so well in Palermo last week, had to be stretchered off the pitch at Vicarage Road and spent the night in hospital at he was assessed by doctors.
It is yet another injury problem that Glenn Roeder could do without, although Shay Given is thought to be close to a first-team return after his long absence.
Roeder told the club's website: "Tim got injured before the game in Italy last week, and we weren't sure then whether he had damaged his cartilage or just had a bang on his knee.
"We had it scanned, and that didn't show anything conclusive and he was able to play against Palermo and had the most wonderful debut.
"We were not 100 per cent certain that there wasn't some sort of cartilage damage, and sure enough it looks like that has surfaced."
The boss added: "He wasn't going to be involved in the game, but was doing a pre-match training session when he dived and made a save. As he got up, the knee locked and he was in a lot of pain."

Shola Ameobi fears he has played his last game of the season for Newcastle.
The forward has been plagued by a hip complaint for well over a year and has been playing through the pain barrier for much of this campaign.
Ameobi returned to the Newcastle side at the weekend, having been absent for over a fortnight, but he looked well off the pace during Newcastle's 0-0 draw with Manchester City.
The forward is set to head to America for an operation and he does not expect to play again this season.
"It all depends on what the medical team say, but this might be my last game," said Ameobi. "It is a no-brainer - an operation is inevitable.
>> Both Ameobi and Owen out for rest of the season I guess. Rossi back to ManUtd in January. Luque is frustrated and out of the team while Martins has has got a bad start in the PL. Sibierski is just a regular Coca-Cola striker.
Duff, Emre, Solano, Parker are not typically goalscorers either. So something big must happen in January, if not, this club will be in the soda league next season.

Dyer feared for sight
Quote:
Kieron Dyer has revealed that he feared he had lost the sight in one eye following a freak training-ground accident.
The speedy midfielder was putting the finishing touches to his rehabilitation following a lengthy spell on the sidelines when he collided with a pole.
Dyer lost all vision in one eye and has revealed that doctors initially feared the worst.
He underwent a series of tests in hospital and although his vision is not 100 percent, Dyer has been informed there is unlikely to be any lasting damage.
"I thought I had lost the sight in one eye," Dyer told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle. "My sight completely went.
"And when I looked at the doctor's face and he did not want to say how bad it was, I realised it was bad.
"By the time we got to the hospital to see the specialist, my sight still had not come back.
"But after we waited around, it slowly came back and after they did the tests, they said there was a lot of trauma to the eye, but I should get my eyesight back.
"It is still not 100 percent, but I was given the okay to play after two weeks."
Dyer returned against Manchester City at the weekend and has revealed he was disappointed to be named on the bench.
He added: "I was a bit disappointed I was only on the bench. But the manager has that approach, even though he is under a lot of pressure.
"He was at West Ham when he had the likes of Paolo Di Canio and Frederic Kanoute injured. He never rushes players back.
"You are frustrated, but you have got to take your hat off. He never takes chances with his players and you have got to be thankful for that."

Martins targets Gunners
Quote:
Oba Martins has returned to training with Newcastle United - and the £10m man hopes to put himself in the frame for Saturday's daunting trip to face an in-form Arsenal.
The United striker did not appear for the second half of the Carling Cup victory over Portsmouth at St James' Park on October 25 because of a hamstring injury and he has missed the last five games.
But he was back in training today - just in time to see Shola Ameobi say goodbye to the rest of his United colleagues for the rest of the season, with word being received from the US that the 25-year-old striker has been booked in for his hip operation next week.
This means that United will be without two of their three front-line strikers, Michael Owen and Ameobi, for the rest of the season and Martins is now so crucial to them.
|
Good, we certainly need him. Our only good striker at the moment. Please stay fit!

Baba injury rocks Toon
Quote:
Newcastle United have been rocked by yet another injury setback when they were forced to rule left-back Celestine Babayaro out of their plans for the next couple of weeks.
And no sooner had Glenn Roeder been informed of this than Babayaro was joined in the treatment room by Olivier Bernard, who has a hip problem.
And this latest injury is going to make it all the more difficult for the French left-back to force his way into United's Premiership side before his contract runs out at the end of the season.
But Babayaro's injury is the more immediate concern as he is currently the only senior recognised left-back on the club's books.
The United boss said today: "We will have to do without Celestine Babayaro for the next two or three weeks after he hurt his groin in extra time at Watford last Tuesday night.
"And Olly Bernard has a hip injury, which is different to the one Shola Ameobi has but at the moment we cannot put a time on how long he will be out."
Unlike his predecessor Graeme Souness, Roeder has got Babayaro turning in decent enough performances whenever United can get him on to the field. The United boss added: "Babayaro has been one of our most consistent players recently but he just cannot seem to retain his fitness and have a long run in our back four."
As far as Bernard is concerned, United admit they have struggled to get him back to the level of fitness required in the Premiership and it is looking increasingly likely that his return to St James' Park is not going to work out for the amiable Frenchman.
