We always have to plan a season without Dyer and if he does make it then it's a bonus but like most I'm not expecting him to last very long. We really need him.

Default Owen Must Wait

Injured Newcastle United striker Michael Owen has had another setback, as he must wait for swelling to go down on his knee.
The 26-year-old sustained the injury in England’s World Cup game against Sweden.
Owen is awaiting a second operation in America under the hands of Dr.Richard Steadman, but the swelling on Owen’s knee must go down first.
During the first operation, the striker only had the cartilage in his knee repaired, with the actual damage to the cruciate ligament remaining.

Owen said:

"I'm just hoping the next operation can be successful. I have to make sure the knee is in a fit state and the swelling is down.

"That way I can give myself the best possible chance of having the cruciate operation.

"The plan is to go back out there in six or seven weeks - hopefully, that will be the last I see of America.

"Maybe then there will be light at the end of the tunnel and I can head for a comeback."

The £17 million striker only played 11 games for the Magpies last season after a foot injury sustained on New Years Eve.
It is now feared that Owen could miss the whole of the 2006/2007 season, forcing Glenn Roeder to get cover in, as the Magpies only have Shola Ameobi as a natural striker.

Default Dyer close to Newcastle United return

Kieron Dyer could return to action for Newcastle United Football Club at the end of this month.

The midfielder is undergoing rehabilitation to cure his long-standing hamstring problems, and manager Glenn Roeder is hoping to have the player available at the end of August.

"Kieron Dyer is having an extended period of rehab and is working really well at the moment, flat out," Roeder told the Sunday Sun. "We're not expecting him back at the training ground until the end of August, but we're monitoring his progress.

"It'll be around about the end of August when we really put all his hard work to the test when we get into the situation of playing him in games.

"We're really positive about him at the moment. We need him fit, if I could have him for 30-plus starts, that would be absolutely wonderful.

"We're pleased with the way it's going, there's nothing untoward to worry about.

"He should be back fully fit by the end of August/early September, and because of that level of fitness he will have, it shouldn't take him long to get back into the swing of football."

Default Injury scare

Shay Given has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad with a back injury but is expected to be fit for the opening game at Wigan.
The Magpies keeper picked up the injury in last week's UEFA Cup second qualifying round tie against Ventspils; the last thing Newcastle needed ahead of Saturday's opener.
Glenn Roeder was forced to ask Steve Staunton to allow the shot-stopper to stay on Tyneside, while the Republic face Holland in a friendly on Wednesday, so Given could receive treatment.

Roeder told the club's website: "Steve Staunton has allowed us to withdraw Shay from the Ireland squad for the game against Holland.

"Instead, Shay will remain on Tyneside and have treatment for a slight back problem."

Given is expected to be fit to face Wigan but it's hardly ideal for his defence to have slight concerns over their keeper's fitness going into the opening Premiership match.

Default Roeder confident over Duff injury

Glenn Roeder is sure Damien Duff will be fit to face Wigan despite the injured Newcastle winger pulling out of the Republic of Ireland squad.

The £5million summer capture from Chelsea suffered a groin injury in training in Dublin and immediately returned to St James' Park.

The news comes after Shay Given also withdrew earlier in the week from the squad to face Holland with a back problem picked up in the Uefa Cup qualifying win over Ventspils.

Roeder insists Duff's injury is not serious though and the Magpies boss has been given the same assurances by Republic boss Steve Staunton.

"I'd like to thank Steve Staunton for pulling Damien out of the squad," Roeder told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

"It was just a precaution really but it allows us to get Damien back here to have a look at him and we think there will be no problems having him available for Saturday."

Meanwhile, Newcastle youngster Alan O'Brien also has a slight back problem, although it is not considered serious enough to threaten his chances of a first Ireland cap.

Carr is also injured and will miss the clash against Wigan.

Damn those international matches three days before PL starts and N'castles injure problem is back to normal again.

Default Owen update

Michael Owen flies to the USA today to have an operation on the anterior cruciate ligament that he ruptured against Sweden during his disastrous World Cup. He is travelling to Colorado to be operated later on in the week by renowned knee specialist Dr. Richard Steadman, whose previous patients include a number of illustrious footballers including Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistlerooy and Alan Shearer as well as the vice-president Dick Cheney!

The 26-year-old seemed in optimistic mood before surgery, describing the operation as something that 'needs to be done' and a 'chink of light' for him. Owen has already had one operation since his agonizing injury in the summer, that repaired cartilage damage in the same knee in July.

All those in England and particularly those in the North East will be hoping that this operation will help to end the striker's injury nightmare that began shortly after he joined the Magpies for £17 million last year and has resulted in only 11 Newcastle appearances. Having joined the recent trend of breaking metatarsals, he returned only in time to play one game for the club before the World Cup and his latest injury promises to keep him out for the large part of the coming season.

He told the club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk: "I have been basically biding my time since the first operation to prepare for this one and once it is out of the way, I can get on with the rehabilitation." Owen's absence leaves a hole in the Magpies' striking options, which were already without the services of the irreplaceable Alan Shearer. Glen Roeder went some way to solving this with the purchase of Obafemi Martins and the loan of Giuseppe Rossi and only missing out on Mark Viduka on the last day of the transfer window, but fans of the club will hope that Owen comes true on his promise to be 'as good as ever' on his return.

I think it will be a big relief for him when this surgery are done, so he finally will be clear for start working to come back on the pitch.I can't wait for him to return but this will take a lot of patience and time before he's strong enough to run and play football again. He's an important player for any team he plays for.I miss to see Michael Owen on the pitch although he don't play for Liverpool no longer. He's a Liverpool player in my heart.

Apparently an ACL injury requires a rehabilitation period of 5 - 9 months. The earliest possible return would be March I imagine, that's if his rehabilitation goes perfectly well without any hitches. There's no chance they'll rush him though, so I think we're looking at March at the earliest before he's playing Premiership football again. But there's just as much chance he's out for the season, it's anyone's guess.

He was supposed to be having this surgery two months ago, hence why a January return was the original forecast. Put that back two months and we're looking at March for a hopeful comeback. Roeder said in his talk-in that "there's no point me saying he'll be back in March and then he misses the season", he tried to make it sound like that date was plucked out of thin air but I think that's probably what they're hoping for, if everything goes to plan (which, with us, it usually doesn't).

Default Owen knee op declared a big success

MICHAEL OWEN's knee operation has been declared a big success. The £17 million signing is now recovering after going under the surgeon's knife in America.

And Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has told the Press that the op on his prize asset - performed to repair anterior cruciate knee ligament - went like clockwork.

Roeder, speaking through the club's official website, said: "I've spoken to our club doctor Roddy MacDonald across in Colorado and he gave me the fantastic news that Michael's operation went extremely well.

"As far as Michael is concerned, he can now start to focus on playing again.

"It's going to be a long haul but he can start to focus on that.

"And I look forward to the day when I can write his name on a Newcastle United teamsheet."

Owen is due back on English soil in around a week's time, but he is still expected to spend the vast majority - if not all - of the current season on the sidelines.

Default Nobby missing

The hamstring strain that kept Nolberto Solano out of the UEFA Cup tie in Tallinn looks likely to see the Peruvian out of action for three weeks.

While his team mates were securing a first leg advantage in Estonia, Solano was having a scan on the hamstring he injured in training and the news wasn't good.

A seemingly fully fit Solano was left out of the starting eleven for the Fulham defeat last Saturday and was an unused substitute.

Default Stomach surgery for Given

Quote:
Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given has undergone surgery after suffering a stomach injury in the win at West Ham on Sunday.
The Irish star was taken to hospital after the game following a collision with West Ham striker Marlon Harewood.

Magpies' boss Glenn Roeder told the club website: "Shay has had surgery to repair a small tear in his lower stomach.
"He is comfortable and will have a short stay in hospital.

"We'll let things settle down now and it's too early to be putting any date on when he'll be expected back."

Get well soon!
