Nolberto Solano has completed his return to Newcastle United, with James Milner moving to Aston Villa on loan.
Magpies manager Graeme Souness stepped up his interest in the Peruvian in the past week after Liverpool failed to tempt Villa into a deal.
Solano passed a medical at St James' Park on Wednesday evening and the deal was completed with less than an hour of the transfer window remaining.
To smooth Solano's passage back to Tyneside, Newcastle have agreed to allow Milner to join Villa on a season-long loan.
Milner made his breakthrough at Leeds United during current Villa manager David O'Leary's tenure at Elland Road.
The England Under-21 international has now been reunited with O'Leary and will hope for regular first-team football at Villa Park.
For Newcastle, the return of Solano caps a tremendous day in the transfer market, with Michael Owen having joined in a club record deal from Real Madrid.
Solano will be looked upon to provide the ammunition for Owen and captain Alan Shearer as Newcastle still seek their first goal of the new Premiership season.
He first left St James' Park 18 months ago but has been persuaded to rejoin the club, for whom he made 233 appearances in his initial spell.
