Thing is, if he can get us into europe next season it will be worth it. But laready there have been massive shirt sales and will continue to be for time to come, which no other player would have brought in, so he is more than player like youve said penny, and will bring in the money from publicity.

haha, funniest transfer story EVER.
i have lost all respect for the lad, to join that joke of a club, with their joke of a chairman and a double joke of a manager, is criminal. the fans who are welcoming him with open arms are d1ckheads, is it not obvious to them that he was trying to worm as much money out of them as he possibly could, and also glaringly obvious that this move is absolutely his last resort.
i hoped newcastle would go down before this, now i am praying!!!

Thats right, Mat!
Michael Owen is a Galactico, good or not good. N'castle will have a lot of benefits having Owen in the squad. I thinking of sponsors, public, shirt sales and the interest around the club now. Remember that he is the second most famous footballer in the UK, top five world over. Everyone has heard about Michael Owen, interested in football or not. He has been scorer number 1 for Liverpool seven years on row, and he was the player in Spain last season who scored most goals from the playing time. He scored 16 goals for Real Madrid, and thats not bad when he was sub 90 % of the matches.

>> So you think he choiced N'castle because of the money? If you think so, he'll not be alone.
Michael Owen had personally earned more in Real Madrid, on the bench or not, and he had not starved in Liverpool either. The fact is that Owen wants to play 90 minuts in every match, because of World Cup 2006 in Germany. Liverpool did not need him, and Benitez didn't want him either. Liverpool have Cisse, Morientes, Crouch, Pongolle, Mellor and Luis Garcia as strikers. He had not been guaranteed 100 % football there. Real Madrid have Ronaldo, Raul, Baptista, Portillo and Robinho.
Owen choiced The Magpies because he want to play football, and that he want to continue as Englands striker, and then he have to impress.

I'm lovin that comment. he joined us because he had no other option, because it was a choice of real, or the top three english clubs and liverpool, who all turned him down. I don't see how he was trying to worm money out of us when we were his only option. And the bit about wanting us relegated and us being ********s, very rich coming from a scouser, (not personal just the same generalisation you used), just come across that you are bitter at your board for not signing the player, and we've managed to buy a player with a one goal every two matches premiership record, which you dont. I'm not saying we've pulled off a massive transfer coup over you as your board wasn't interested, but you just seem jealous we have bought a player that you obviously wanted.

not a generalisation, i didnt say all newcastle fans are d1ckheads (altho am yet to meet one that isnt), i said the d1ckheads are the ones who will kiss his arse and act like he's the messiah when he is clearly using you as the easy, no pressure option before the world cup, then if he has a good world cup, or even an average one, he will be obviously looking for somewhere else to, ahem, "win trophies".
and if you know me on here mat, you will know i hate newcastle with a passion for family reasons, this has simply added another reason. that along with the complete bunch of w@nkers you have and have had in your club (shepherd, souness, bowyer, dyer, bellamy, robert, ginola, batty etc).
owen is proven class, i would have loved to see him back at liverpool. but at the end of the day he made his bed by engineering a move last season, it all blew up in his face, and he's returned looking for a pay day and an easy life, and we all know the club that will give any player that. i blame the fact that you let shepherd sign cheques with a stamp.

whilst im thoroughyl unconvinced that michael owen is a world class striker and a replacement for shearer...he will score goals if the midfield/wingers are working.
plus he is a major boost for newcastle's potential for making money.

I guess in retrospect, Liverpool fans are still very bitter after he left them high and dry, and the club still lacks a top striker.

I am a chelseafan like urself, but by saying owen isnt a worldclass striker you prove u are a fool, he is just as if not more world class then gudjohnsen, drogba and a few more of our starting line-up, like someone said earlier in the thread he is proven world class, and has a great premiership record, i am glad crespo came back to chelsea but if he had not i would have loved us to have got owen

I have though a lot about Owen in the last 24 hours, and I am going to contradict much that I have said in the last few weeks by saying that I think he HAS made a good decision in joining NC.
I was watching Skysports as the reports rolled in last night and was quite over-whelmed at just how humble and passionate the NC fans are. Out on the streets, buying their Owen shirts and celebrating the comming of a star. There was not a question amoung them in respect of him not really wanting to go there, just smiling, happy faces...
I know we have all poked fun at him and have judged him for his lack of opportunities in the last 18 months or so, but I reckon he'll come good again as he always does, he'll prove his critics wrong. I agree that he isn't quite the player he once was and that he doesn't out-right deserve his starting place for England right now. Still, a good season at NC could turn that around and if he has a better season than Defoe this year and gets his eye for goal back in line then I'll be glad for him to lead us into the world cup...
His career has seemingly taken a very controvercial dip. He left an almost there team in Liverpool after a pretty bad season to join a great team in Real Madrid. But he couldn't break into their front line, and had to settle for coming off the bench, all-be-it to score many vital goals. Still, I have to ask how many of the worlds strikers could displace Raul and Ronaldo??? Raul, no chance, the sweet-heart of Madrid could go 10 games without a goal and the crowd still wouldn't allow the Manager to drop him. Ronaldo, well, chubby or not he's still a top class and a good proven partner for Raul... Let's see if Robinho can break up the party this season and then I may eat my words...
So now Owens a NC player...
GOOD LUCK TO NC AND GOOD LUCK TO OWEN!!!
