Alan Shearer is trying to claim the first goal at St Mary's on Sunday, even though it was going a yard wide! It comes as no surprise as the ex-England skipper is trying to catch Jackie Milburn's Newcastle United record, but it will be knocked back the FA "goals panel".
It takes a cheek even to take it to tribunal, showing just how desperate Shearer is to break more records. But a "blind man on a charging horse" could see his strike was heading well wide of the far post when Saints' David Prutton stabbed in Shearer shot.
ALAN SHEARER: "You know me, I'm certainly claiming it as mine. I was happy to get on the end of the cross and it was a good time to score - although, in saying that, I don't know a bad time to score."
Micky Quinn refused to have a goal "chalked off" when he played for Newcastle back in 1991. Throughout the rest of his career he always added one to the figure given by journalists as his goal tally. And he had a very good point.
The match was at St James' Park against Oxford United that was abandoned because of a water-logged pitch after Quinn had scored.
The FA said the goal could not stand because as far as they were concerned the match "didn't take place".
Quinn's argument was that he picked up a yellow card that the FA insisted had to stand.
MICK QUINN: "If the match 'didn't take place', how come my booking still stood? They recognised the booking but not the goal".
