Default Baseball NY Mets still on the run for a MLS Team

* BEST OF THE WEB: Second New York-Area Team?

"New York City businessman with experience in the taxi business and as a commercial lender has emerged as a likely new investor in Major League Soccer.

"Andrew Murstein, 40, the president of Medallion Financial Corporation, said he had been negotiating to buy the Kansas City Wizards from Lamar Hunt and move them to San Antonio, Las Vegas, Houston ... or perhaps New York.

"Soccer, to me, looks like the best investment in the sports world," Murstein said yesterday in a telephone interview. "Teams in other leagues have really reached their peak in market value."

Murstein said he had held discussions the past several years to purchase baseball's Milwaukee Brewers, the N.H.L.'s Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the N.B.A.'s San Antonio Spurs. He added that any deal to buy an M.L.S. team would be a personal investment and would not involve Medallion. ..."

I would love to see multiple teams in the general NYC area including one on the Island. I think the city could handle many, many clubs if you put them in proper places to make the people of there neighborhood feel like it's there club. It's not going to happen if you have to travel to Giant Stadium or some other place just over the border in Jersey. I think a regional team on Long Island would be successful. How about Long Island United FC? I like it and the name too. I think if there was a teams in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan it would work out quite well, if they clubs were for them and not for the rest of the city.

New ownership: Andrew Murstein, who owns a New York taxicab medallion-selling firm, wants to own a Major League Soccer team and has offered to buy the Kansas City Wizards from Lamar Hunt.

Murstein, 40, has previously tried to purchase the Milwaukee Brewers in baseball, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks of the NHL and the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA.

His interest in the MLS is reportedly a simple financial decision, not one born from a love of the game.

“Soccer, to me, looks like the best investment in the sports world,” Murstein said in a New York Times interview. “Teams in other leagues have really reached their peak in market value.”

If the sale is approved, Murstein may consider moving the team to San Antonio, where the league has already negotiated a deal to play in the Alamo Dome. He is also considering the New York area, home of the New Jersey-based MetroStars.

For the New York idea, Murstein said he has offered more than $1 million for the rights to the name “Cosmos,’’ the popular New York team from previous American professional soccer leagues. That name is owned by a man named Peppe Pinton.

Murstein’s family owns $200 million worth of taxicab medallions in New York City. A cab owner must have a medallion to operate legally in the city, and each medallion costs about $250,000 to acquire
