Metrostars Stadium delayed
SOCCER
More cash for talent a good idea

HERALD NEWS
Metros Stadium delayed
The celebration last summer that marked the completion of the MetroStars Stadium project in Harrison highlighted 2007 as the target date for completion of the long-awaited new home for the Metros. That date is starting to look less and less realistic.
Delays in the departure of tenants of the warehouse that sits atop the MetroStars Stadium site could force the team to wait until 2008 for a new home. According to Nick Sakewicz, former MetroStars president and president of AEG New York, the delays have jeopardized the chances for an opening in the summer of 2007.
"Right now it's about 50/50 between 2007 and 2008," said Sakiewicz. "It is a logistical issue. Certain things have to happen in a certain order and right now we're waiting for the town and the tenants to come up with a plan so we have an idea of where things stand."
A handful of tenants, including National Wholesale Liquidators, have yet to leave the warehouse, owned by Spiegel Trucking, and prolonged delays in their departure would force the Metros to wait until 2008 to open their new 25,000 seat stadium.
Sakiewicz suggested that waiting until 2008 might be the better option at this point.
"I would almost rather wait until 2008 because there's no point rushing into it and having it not be a good experience for the fans," said Sakiewicz. "I learned a lot of things watching (FC Dallas' Pizza Hut Park) happen. One thing we will not do is open the building in the condition that Frisco was in."

Will the playing surface be natural grass or the field turf they use at Giants Stadium?
