The Wizards gave up their first goal of the season in Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Burn. The goal ended goalkeeper Tony Meola's scoreless streak at 197 minutes.

Tony Meola a future Hall famer, the best keeper ever in the MLS, got the record
Goalkeeper Tony Meola continued to add to his MLS career shutout mark with his second in a row, the 55th clean sheet of his MLS career. The Wizards haven't allowed a goal in 239 minutes, the last scored against Kansas City by Jason Kreis in the 31st minute of a 5-1 victory on July 3

Soccer notebook: Meola elevated to legend status
Tuesday, July 27, 2004
BY FRANK GIASE
Star-Ledger Staff
It wouldn't surprise anyone to know that Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola will be starting Saturday night when Major League Soccer holds its All-Star festivities at RFK Stadium in Washington.
It's just that he's starting in the wrong game.
Meola, a five-time All-Star, leads a Wizards defense that has given up a MLS-low 16 goals this season, yet the two goalkeepers representing the Western Conference are Pat Onstad of the last-place Earthquakes and Kevin Hartman of the Galaxy, whose teams have allowed 26 and 28 goals, respectively, this season.
Meola will be playing in the opening game of the doubleheader, a legends game pitting MLS USA players against MLS World players to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 1994 World Cup and the early years of the league.
Sixteen of the 22 players from the '94 squad are scheduled to attend, including coach Bora Milutinovic, who will coach the squad.
U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena will coach a legends squad that includes Jorge Campos, Marco Etcheverry, Carlos Valderrama, MetroStars assistant coach Mo Johnston and Giovanni Savarese, arguably the most popular player in MetroStars history.
YOU WERE WARNED
The feeling here last week was that MLS clubs were there for the taking against A-League competition in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, but what happened was even more than expected.
Four of the six MLS teams lost, with just the Earthquakes and Wizards not only winning but doing so in convincing fashion. The MetroStars, Galaxy, Revolution and D.C. United were eliminated, leaving a clean split -- four MLS teams and four A-League teams -- in the Aug. 4 quarterfinals.
"We took it very seriously," MetroStars midfielder Eddie Gaven said of the 1-0 loss to the Charleston Battery July 20 in South Carolina. "We had two goals this year, the league and the Open Cup. We were definitely trying to win. We just didn't play well."
The MetroStars, who lost to the Chicago Fire in the Open Cup final last season, were a bit unlucky, missing a penalty kick and hitting the woodwork a couple of times.
"It was a disappointment to get knocked out," said MetroStars coach Bob Bradley, who has won the competition three times, twice as head coach of the Fire and once as an assistant with D.C. United. "We knew it was going to be everything for Charleston."
Domestic cup competitions around the world are considered secondary to league and major tournament play, so coaches tend to rest starters. Goalkeeper Jonny Walker, leading scorer Amado Guevara and midfielder Ricardo Clark didn't play against the Battery, but Bradley said that was because they were hurt.
"They would have played. We weren't messing around," Bradley said. "But, hey, it's cup competition, and we took one the hard way."

Well if they had kept him what would have become of Howard? I can't say I'm sad because it allowed Timmeh to develop.
