7. MLS: Quakes fall in shootout at La Manga Cup

The San Jose Earthquakes lost to Norwegian club Viking, 5-3, in a shootout after their semifinal match Tuesday at the La Manga Cup in Spain ended in a 1-1.

Viking faces the MetroStars in the final, and San Jose takes on Dynamo Kiev of Ukraine for third Place. Both games will be played Friday.

MetroStars Trade Rights to Moreno 02/03/04

The MetroStars announced today that they have traded the rights to Jaime Moreno to D.C. United. The MetroStars will receive future considerations for the rights to Moreno, and will receive additional considerations if Moreno is added to D.C. United's final 2004 roster.

Moreno, who is 30 years old, was acquired along with Eddie Pope and Richie Williams by the MetroStars from D.C. United on December 23, 2002 in exchange for Mike Petke, an allocation and a first round pick. Moreno saw action in 11 games and tallied two goals for the Metros last season before being placed on season ending injured reserve on August 21st due to a herniated disc in his lower back.

METROS' HOME: On a conference call Wednesday, Metros general manager Nick Sakiewicz stated ground could be broken within six months on a project that includes a stadium for the team.
A 25,000-seat stadium is part of an extensive $3 billion development plan adjacent to the Passaic River in Harrison, N.J. The project will include commercial and retail space, housing, green space and a parking garage.
By the end of this month, said Sakiewicz, documentation of the financing plan to fund Phase I of the project -- which includes the stadium and parking garage -- should be completed. It would be submitted to the city of Harrison for approval and then sent to the Hudson County Improvement Authority for implementation.
"We feel we'll be under construction for Phase I of the development by late summer/early fall," said Sakiewicz, "and anticipate we can open the stadium in April, 2006."
