well bringing in the queer of goals didn't help much either... money that definitely could've been spent better elsewhere.

2. D.C UNITED (11-10-9) vs. METROSTARS (11-12-7)
GAME 1: at MetroStars Saturday, Oct. 23, 7:30 pm ET (TV: MLS Direct
Kick, Fox Sports World)
GAME 2: at D.C. United Saturday, Oct. 30, 7 pm ET (TV: MLS Direct
Kick, HDNet, Fox Sports World)

REGULAR SEASON: United won three of four, beating the Metros 6-2 and
3-2 at home and also winning 1-0 at the Meadowlands. Metros' only win
(3-2) was way back on April 17.

THE SUBTLE: D.C. has won five of its last six. Two of those wins were
against the Metros, who led the league in goals scored (47) as well
as goals allowed (49). It hasn't been a great season for Eddie Pope
and Jonny Walker. For a team coached by Bob Bradley, the Metros have
been maddeningly inconsistent. They have the weapons to win but do
they have the will? And what does John Wolyniec (10 goals) have to do
to be loved?

BURDEN OF PROOF: D.C.'s late-season addition Christian Gomez is
another lance by which the Metros soft center can be pierced. If he
can free up Alecko Eskandarian and Jaime Moreno, the Metros are
cooked. Someone must help Ricardo Clark clean up the middle. Will
D.C. thumper Dema Kovalenko or MetroDiva Amado Guevara (10 goals, 10
assists) be cautioned first?

THE OBVIOUS: Nick Rimando has looked sharp and strong, yet his
limited range puts the onus on his D.C. teammates to clear the balls
he can't get to.

QUOTE: "During the season, I told my team winning is about running
and fighting, not just soccer. That is why we have been winning and
lately we have been able to play soccer, too." -- D.C. United coach
Peter Nowak.

Default Metros 2004 regular season awards

MetroStars announce 2004 regular season awards winners
Second annual awards ceremony held at Liberty Science Center
MetroStars Media Relations

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The MetroStars presented their 2004 regular season awards tonight at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ. The night featured 16 awards with 10 going to MetroStars players, three to the Youth Soccer Clubs of the Year, two to MetroStars Player Development Academy players and one to the "Red and Black's" Fan of the Year.
Amado Guevara took home the most hardware of the night, winning three awards including the 2004 Honda Most Valuable Player, Budweiser Scoring Champion and MetroStars.com Player of the Year.

The MetroStars Most Valuable Player, sponsored by American Honda Motor Company, awards the player who made the most significant impact on the MetroStars success in the 2004 regular season. Guevara, in his second year with the Metros, proved to be invaluable to the squad this season. He led the team and league in total points and also demonstrated his leadership skills, separating him from other players in the league.

Additionally, Guevara was crowned the MetroStars 2004 Budweiser Scoring Champion. Guevara tied Pat Noonan for the league title with 30 points. His 10 goals and 10 assists proved to be beneficial in many key games for the Metros this season. John Wolyniec finished second on the MetroStars in points with 23 points.

The captain of the Honduran national team was also recognized as MetroStars.com Player of the Year. This award was voted on by fans on the team's website www.metrostars.com.

Tim Regan captured the U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year Award for the second straight year. This award is presented to the player who has made a significant impact on the local community and recognizes the player who has served as the strongest role model while also being a steady community contributor. Regan has established himself in this role off the field. He has coached youth soccer in Wyckoff, read to the children of Harrison in the public library, visited children at St. Barnabas Medical Center, taught handicapped children the fundamentals of soccer and is an active member of the "Athletes in Action" organization.

Eddie Pope was also a back-to-back winner. Pope took home the MetroStars 2004 Defender of the Year award for the second straight year. Pope is recognized as one of the greatest American defenders of all-time. He is the team captain and a fixture on the U.S. men's national team squad. He has been a steadying force behind the MetroStars defense this year helping them make their second consecutive playoff appearance.

Another fixture in the 2004 MetroStars line-up took home this year's Unsung Player of the Year Award. This award honors the player who makes consistent contributions to the team without receiving headlines and great notoriety, however is just as important as the team star. John Wolyniec proved to be a steady and important contributor for the "Red and Black" in 2004. He started 23 games, scored 10 goals and had three assists. Five of his 10 goals scored were game winners.

Jeff Parke was awarded 2004's Newcomer of the Year. The award goes to a new player whose play proved most valuable for the team. There were 11 eligible players including rookies, and those acquired in trades, signings and transfers. Parke burst out on the soccer scene this year in his rookie campaign. The Drexel product was the last pick in 2004's MLS SuperDraft, however his strong and solid play earned him a starting position in the Metros back line bolstering the team's defense.

Defender Chris Leitch was also recognized for his contributions to the 2004 "Red and Black" squad. Leitch brought home 2004's Iron Man Award, which goes to the player who logs the most minutes of action throughout the course of the year. Leitch started 29 of 30 games, playing the full 90 minutes in each of those contests.

MetroStars sophomore Eddie Gaven claimed the rights to the Young Player of the Year Award. The award recognizes a player under the age of 23 who has been able to handle the pressures of being a professional athlete while delivering positive results on the field. At the young age of 17, Gaven has proven to be an integral part of the MetroStars squad. He tallied seven goals and seven assists giving him 21 points on the season, good for third-place on the team, trailing only Amado Guevara and John Wolyniec. Additionally, Gaven has been called up to the U.S. men's national team roster multiple times this year, earning his first cap in a friendly match against Poland earlier this year.

As a new twist, the MetroStars also decided to honor 2004's Play of the Year. There was a tie in the voting for this category with Cornell Glen and Joselito Vaca being recognized for their respective goals in a wild 5-5 tie against the San Jose Earthquakes at Spartan Stadium on May 8.

In addition to honoring the players, the MetroStars organization also honored youth soccer clubs, developmental players and its greatest fan of the year.

The MetroStars work with hundreds of youth soccer clubs throughout the Tri-State area, however there are some clubs that demonstrate extraordinary levels of support and participation in MetroStars activities. The Youth Soccer Clubs of the Year took part in many of the MetroStars programs and served as strong outlets to promote the growth and success of soccer in this area. Arsenal Soccer Club, Toms River Soccer Club and Hackettstown Soccer Club all took home this honor for their contributions.

The MetroStars also honored two members of their Youth Development Program. The MetroStars Academy Teams compete at the U-19 and U-16 levels. These two teams provide local youth players an outstanding opportunity and positive environment to develop and mature as young pros. Steven Amaya, a member of the U-16 squad, was honored as Young Player of the Year and Stephen Franchini, member of the U-19 squad was awarded for his leadership both on and off the field. Both youngsters proved vital to the success enjoyed by each of their squads in 2004.

Finally, the "Red and Black" recognized one of their most faithful, John Russo, as Fan of the Year. The MetroStars organization received multiple online submissions for this award and narrowed down their search for the winner, which was ultimately decided upon by the team. Russo has been a passionate supporter since the team's inception in 1996 and has become a recognizable face amongst staff, players, media and other fans earning him this award. Nominations for this award were submitted online, and the MetroStars players voted on a winner from the online nominations.

Of the ten awards going to players, seven were voted on by the media (2004 Honda MetroStars Most Valuable Player, 2004 United States Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year, 2004 Major League Soccer's Defender of the Year, 2004 Unsung Player of the Year, 2004 MetroStars Newcomer of the Year, 2004 MetroStars Young Player of the Year and 2004 MetroStars Play of the Year), two were awarded by statistical analysis (2004 MetroStars Budweiser Scoring Champion and 2004 MetroStars Iron Man) and one was voted on by the fans at www.metrostars.com (2004 MetroStars.com Player of the Year).

Bradley, Nowak now on opposite sides
By Charles Boehm / MLSnet.com Staff

The first-round playoff matchup between D.C. United and the MetroStars has all the makings of a classic: fierce rivals with aggressive, attacking styles, dedicated fans, fresh memories of a bruising season series, and to top it all off, a first-year coach facing off against his former mentor.
MetroStars coach Bob Bradley coached Peter Nowak and the Chicago Fire to an MLS Cup championship in 1998, with former Polish international Nowak leading the team from his attacking midfielder spot. The two became close friends and still are today, despite being at the center of one of the league's biggest rivalries.

United nicked a 3-2 victory over the Metros last Sunday at RFK Stadium, gaining home-field advantage for the two-leg playoff series and winning the Atlantic Cup with three wins over their Gotham counterparts.

Afterwards Bradley, already an MLS coaching legend before the league reaches its 10th birthday, predicted an exciting postseason clash.

"There's things there for a good series," he said. "Both teams try to close down quickly in the midfield and win that part of the field. Certainly there's an attempt there to pass quickly and play one- and two-touch in those situations. I think they do that pretty well, and it's something that we also work on. Both teams compete very hard, and the battle lines have been drawn." Nowak insists that he places no extra emphasis on beating his former coach.

"No, not at all," he says. "We are all emotional, but we are professionals. I had a great conversation with Bob even before the game last Sunday, and we know it's going to be hard, both of us. But we're still going to be friends, whatever happens on the field.

"I have great respect for Bob, and the work he did with me when I was playing for him. Nothing is going to change, it's only who's going to go a little further, who's going to make another step."

Nowak endured a tumultuous start to his coaching career, as inconsistent results on the field combined with the media circus around Freddy Adu, baseball's impending move to RFK and other distractions.

But his squad has finished the regular season on a strong run with only one loss since the start of September, earning second place in the Eastern Conference and a contract extension for their coach. Nearly everyone around the club has praised Nowak's steady hand and unswerving focus in helping stabilize what was a reeling franchise.

"Since day one, I think he's been consistent as far as the way he's approached us and the game," said second-year striker Alecko Eskandarian. "This year, we went through some ups and downs, but we stayed pretty consistent with our mentality.

"I never had the privilege of playing with Peter, but I'm sure that's the same mentality he had as a player, and he's brought it along as a coach and instilled it in this team. We're basically a mold of his character."

Conversely, Bradley and his players must now recover from three consecutive losses to D.C. in time for Saturday's rematch at Giants Stadium. Foremost in those preparations is a plan to stop United's devastating counterattack, led by strikers Eskandarian and Jaime Moreno and playmaker Christian Gomez.

"One of the things with counters is, you have to have the ability not to give the ball away," says Bradley. "One goal that they scored (last week), it was a set piece for us, and when the ball came loose, Jeff Parke played a square ball that got picked off, and that led to their counter. So we made some bad decisions, and they were good enough to make us pay. A lot of it starts with being better with the ball."

Said defender Eddie Pope: "We just have to learn from our mistakes, look at some tapes and play better defensively as a team. All of their guys are dangerous, because they send so many guys forward from the midfield as well, guys that can score also. I think if you focus on one, then another one can score." Nowak has no real major injury concerns heading into the first leg of the conference semifinals, but there are a few worries with a pair of attacking threats. Freddy Adu suffered a sprained shoulder when he crashed to the turf after being upended by Metros defender Craig Ziadie in the second half of last Sunday's match. Adu landed hard on his neck and shoulder, and despite sitting out practice earlier in the week, is likely to be in uniform on Saturday.

Nowak was upbeat about the phenom's status, even cracking a joke about the injury.

"We don't want to risk anything today," said Nowak early in the week. "He still feels sore. He said he felt a little dizzy before we started practice, but when we put him in the game, he doesn't need to think too much.

Moreno, who this week won honors as the club's People's Choice and Most Valuable Player while also claiming the United scoring championship, has returned from last month's hamstring strain, but the injury is still on his mind.

"I'm feeling fully recovered, but I'm still working on it, trying to get the strength back," he said. "It wasn't a major injury, but sometimes I still have a little bit of fear. I've just got to keep working and strengthening, and I think I'll be all right."
