METROSTARS: Recap

Monday, August 18, 2003

Looking back: Their first visit to the brand-new Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., turned into their third straight draw in league play, with John Wolyniec heading home the rebound of Clint Mathis' header off the crossbar in the 86th minute for a 1-1 result against the Los Angeles Galaxy. The game marked the 10th time this season -- and eighth in the past nine matches -- that the Metros have gone to overtime. Of their 29 goals this season, more than half (15) have been scored after the 60th minute of regulation. But while they may have been satisfied with the point earned on the road, they did fall out of a first-place tie atop the Eastern Division, as the Chicago Fire beat D.C. United, 3-1, to take over sole possession of first place. That sets up a first-place showdown between the Metros and Fire on Sunday at Giants Stadium.

Who's hot: Goalkeeper Jonny Walker keeps being asked to bail out the MetroStars' defense time and time again. He made six saves Saturday, giving him 26 saves (and two goals allowed) in his last three games. He remains the league leader in save percentage, at 87.8 percent (36 saves, 41 shots).... Wolyniec, who was the team's best player, coming off the bench, in Wednesday's 0-0 tie with Kansas City, started and picked up his third goal of the season. He led all players with seven shots.

Who's not: The defense. Things were supposed to have tightened up after Eddie Pope and Steve Jolley returned from their respective injuries, but while the Metros are unbeaten in four games since they've been back, much of that has to do with the outstanding work of Walker in goal.

Who's next: Exhibition game vs. the Rochester Rhinos (A-League) Tuesday in Rochester, N.Y. Chicago Fire, home, Sunday, 4 p.m., MSG

Default ex Poland international sign's with the Metrostars

NEW MEN: Several international players will be joining MLS teams
just in time for the stretch run.

Polish international striker Andrzej Juskowiak, whose most recent
club was Energie Cottbus of the German Bundesliga, is bound for the
Metros.

The Metros acquired a discovery slot for 33-year-old Juskowiak from
the Quakes in exchange for a third-round draft pick in 2005. They
used their two allotted discovery slots on Argentines Juan Forchetti
and Jose Galvan.

Juskowiak, a member of Poland's silver-medal team at the 1992
Olympics, began his pro career in his native country with Lech Poznan
and has played for Sporting Lisbon, Olympiakos, Borussia
Moenchengladbach, Wolfsburg and Cottbus.

His goalscoring record is impressive although injuries have curtailed
his ability the past two seasons. He's scored 136 league goals in 379
matches. He has eight Bundesliga goals in the past two seasons for
Wolfsburg and Energie, which was relegated last season.

Default ex Metrostars coach behind the success at Manchester City

Juan Carlos Osorio a Colombian -american, grew up in Colombia asnd spent his adulp playing and coaching in the United States, the fitness coach/assistant at Manchester City.
'South American coaches are pratically unheard of in England, and MLS, where I came from, doesn't get as much respect at it should'
But when Manchester City sought a fitness coach, it contacted american condiotining Vern Gambetta, he recommended Osorio, then an assistant with the Metrostars. Osorio who played at Southern Connecticut State University and in the A-League, had collected coaching badges from around the world and a science and football degree at John Moores University in Liverpool.
Manchester hired Osorio to help the Blues return to the Premier League traditionally, English clubs used ex pros to handle fitness trainning, which usually mean a lot of running.
Most coaches, regard fitness conditioning as one thing and soccer as another 'says Osorio, who arrived in 2001. I don't'
Osorio almost always includes ball play, his methods were an immediate hit with the Blues, who finish first in the First Division to win promotion. They finish ninth in the Premiership last season, and Osorio was credited for making soft tissue injuries a rarity.
Osorio and his wife, Juliette, have two children, 3 year old Sergio, and 5 month Sebastian, they miss the United States, but Osorio is enamored by English Soccer.

Watch out America - Here Comes Chelsea
09/09/03
By Michael Preston

The shock waves triggered by Peter Kenyon's defection from chief executive of Manchester United to a similar post with Premiership rivals Chelsea are reverberating through the soccer world. And rightly so. The departure of the man credited with much of United's recent success both on and off the field leaves a massive void at Old Trafford.

The first question I was asked in the wave of Kenyon's shift in allegiance was if he would now plan to tour American with his new club, looking to mirror the success he enjoyed here just a few weeks ago with United.

The answer is simple: of course he should, but with a desire to capture a slice of the US market that will far outweigh United's ambitions. Chelsea has the potential to muster more than just a brief preseason PR exercise. Chelsea can join forces with the NFL and invade the United States to the benefit and satisfaction of all concerned.

How so? Well, NFL Europe, the NFL's overseas spring league is desperate to revive a team in England where the London Monarchs were once the jewel in its crown. But London is a media market as complex and competitive as Los Angeles or New York, so simply returning on a whim to the capital city they left in 1998 would be futile.

Enter Chelsea. If the NFL can convince Kenyon that Chelsea and the NFL should join forces and that owner Roman Abramovich will have the lucrative American market at his mercy, they are onto a winner. The pigskin game and FC Barcelona have already collaborated to aid Barca's US ventures and boost the NFL Europe League team Dragons' success to good effect. That agreement could be mirrored to provide the NFL with a return to London and Chelsea with a path to blaze a trail across the Atlantic. Here's how:

An expansion team, the re-born London Monarchs, kicks off the spring 2005 NFL Europe season at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge, a stadium they once called home in the 90s.
In return Chelsea taps into the NFL's marketing and public relations expertise in the US to plan a high profile preseason tour in 2005.
The Monarchs gain access to Chelsea's season ticket database and cross-promote in London to boost attendances.
Chelsea pairs with the powerful NFL broadcasting arm to promote its games and brand in the US.
The Monarchs play in the royal blue of their soccer cousins, are perhaps even renamed the Chelsea Monarchs and heighten their presence in the UK through the soccer club's influence.
Players who progress from the Monarchs to NFL clubs (the list already includes Super Bowl winning quarterback Brad Johnson) help to promote Chelsea in the US and are high profile attendees at their US preseason games.
The list of beneficial links is long and knowing how the NFL craves success in the UK and would dearly love to partner with a Premiership club as they have FC Barcelona in Spain, such a cross promotion is not as far fetched as it sounds. Kenyon and NFL Europe were already on wining and dining terms at the Super Bowl a few years ago, so the wheels have already been set in motion.

So what does this mean for US soccer and MLS? Well, if commissioner Garber is bold enough to walk into his former employers' office at 280 Park Avenue to declare that his soccer league wants a piece of the pie then that's an ideal starting point.

I favor a proposal that Chelsea takes on the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus at NFL venues, with MLS games as curtain raisers. Then enlist Chelsea as the opposition for the MLS all-star game. Then initiate the Anglo-American Championship trophy with Chelsea clashing against the reigning MLS Cup champion for the unofficial MLS/EPL crown.

Tag on a few player loan or exchange deals to add Chelsea fringe players to MLS rosters and encourage MLS stars heading to the Premiership to consider west London their ideal destination and you're onto a winner.

Default MetroStars sign Polish national forward Andrzej Juskowiak

http://www.soccer365.com/US_NEWS/Bre...31_58128.shtml

Metros Acquire Juskowiak 16/09/03

The NY/NJ MetroStars today acquired Polish national team forward Andrzej Juskowiak (on-JAY YOO-sko-VEE-ak) as a Discovery Player and a replacement for Bolivian forward Jaime Moreno, who is on season ending injured reserve due to a herniated disc in his back.

Juskowiak becomes the league maximum third senior international for the Metros, joining midfielder Amado Guevara and defender/midfielder Edgar Bartolomeu. The native of Gostyn, Poland will join the team on Wednesday, September 17 for training at Zimmer Field in Lawrencville, New Jersey from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

"We are excited to bring Andrzej to the MetroStars," said Head Coach Bob Bradley. "He is a strong player with an excellent record of scoring goals for his teams. His experience and character will help us greatly in the important games remaining this season."

Juskowiak joins the Metros after spending a season at Energie Cottbus of the German Bundesliga, where he played 24 games, scoring five goals. He helped knock off 2001 European Cup finalist Bayer Leverkusen with a goal in the 3-0 road victory on January 26, 2003. Juskowiak followed-up that performance by scoring the game-winning goal, in a 2-1 win over VfL Bochum on February 1, 2003. With Cottbus, the 6', 180-pound striker played with U.S. World Cup defender Gregg Berhalter.

The 32-year-old Juskowiak has earned 39 caps (games played) for Poland and has scored 13 goals. His last appearance for the national team came on June 6, 2001, when he started in a 1-1 tie at Armenia in a World Cup Qualifier. The former Polish captain was the leading scorer (7 goals) in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, where he led Poland to the silver medal and launched his career. Juskowiak scored against a highly-touted Italian side in a 3-0 first round romp, which led to winning Group A with a 2-0-1 record. In the semifinals, Juskowiak registered a hat trick in a 6-1 destruction of Australia, before losing 3-2 to the hosts in the final.

The powerful forward started his professional career at the age of 17 with Lech Poznan of the Polish First Division. He spent five seasons with the Polish outfit playing in 95 games and scoring 43 goals. After flourishing at the Olympics and at Lech Poznan, he ventured to Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, where he played for three seasons scoring 25 goals in 74 games.

"We are pleased that Andrzej is here and is ready to get acclimated to his new team," said MetroStars President and General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. "We are looking forward to him contributing in our playoff run down the stretch of the season."

Prior to joining Cottbus, Juskowiak spent four seasons with VfL Wolfsburg of the Bundesliga, where he played 108 games and knocked in 39 goals, including three consecutive seasons with double-digit goal totals (1998-99: 13 goals; 1999-2000: 11; 2000-01: 12). U.S. World Cup star Claudio Reyna was a teammate of Juskowiak's at Wolfsburg.

Juskowiak has also played for Borussia Mönchengladbach of Germany (1996-98) and Olympiakos of Greece (1995-96).
