Metros Linked With Portsmouth's Mark Burchill
Press speculation in today's (3/16) U.K. tabloids (Daily Star & The Express) are suggesting the Metrostars are interested in Portsmouth striker Mark Burchill. Burchill is 23 years old and has been capped at least six times for Scotland's National Team, and signed for Portsmouth on August 24, 2001 for a transfer fee of some £ 900,000 from Celtic. Burchill has also played on loan for Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan, Dundee, Ipswich, and Birmingham City.

"If we hadn't gone to Spain, in all likelihood [Oliver Occean] would have signed with us. I'm pretty angry and disappointed about it."
-- MetroStars coach Bob Bradley. Occean, a MetroStars draft choice, signed with Norwegian club Odd Grenland, which saw him play in Spain. (The New York Times)
"A month ago we weren't sure he would make the squad. Essentially, there is a flaw in the system. These kids are not getting paid. Nowhere else in the world do kids go on trial for a month. Obviously folks are not pleased with this, but such is the business."
-- Patrick McCabe, Occean's agent. (The New York Times)

MetroStars get Colombian forward Sergio Galvan Rey
The Associated Press
3/26/04 5:54 PM
SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) -- The MetroStars acquired Argentine forward Sergio Galvan Rey with an allocation from Colombian club Once Caldas on Friday.
Galvan Rey gives the MetroStars an MLS-maximum third senior international, joining Honduran midfielder Amado Guevara and Ugandan defender Tenywa Bonseu.
The deal comes days ahead of the FIFA-imposed transfer window of March 31 for MLS teams.
The 30-year-old Galvan Rey has scored 171 goals in eight years with Once Caldas.
"He has a true eye for the goal and his experience and leadership will be invaluable to our young team," MetroStars coach Bob Bradley said.
Nicknamed "The King of Goals" -- his name "Rey" means "king" in Spanish -- Galvan Rey was born in Argentina, but also holds Colombian citizenship.

"I have no idea. The Rangers have a zillion marquee players but they never make the playoffs."

"All the papers are signed. All that's left is the county commission's approval of a bond sale. This is the one facility that will stand out amid the mess of other facilities that have been talked about in the area."
--Don Garber, MLS commissioner, on the MetroStars new stadium in Harrison, N.J., for which ground is supposed to be broken this summer. (The New York Times)
"I'm not sure what the commissioner saw or heard, but that statement is very premature. We've built a deal around a structure we think the county can approve, but by no means would I say this is a slam dunk."
-- Peter Higgins, chairman president of the Harrison Redevelopment Agency, responding to comments from Commissioner Don Garber that "the deal is done" on a new MetroStars stadium (Newark Star-Ledger)

ELEVENTH HOUR: Suddenly, it seems, MLS is awash with foreign forwards, most of them young, as the Wednesday closing of the transfer window drew nearer.
The Metros have nabbed Cornell Glen of Trinidad & Tobago, who rang up a hat trick in San Juan Jabloteh's 5-2 routing of Chicago in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals first leg.
They used a minor allocation to obtain Glen, who has represented his national team 11 times and is on the roster for a friendly against Egypt in Cairo on Wednesday.
San Juan reportedly made a quick profit on Glen. He had signed with the team only three weeks ago.
Already in red-and-black are Jamaican forward Fabian Taylor and Argentine striker Sergio Galvan Rey. Taylor and Glen will count as transitional internationals, Galvan Rey takes up one of the Metros three slots for senior internationals (25 and older).
The Rapids waived Chris Carrieri last week and then signed Jean-Philippe Peguero, 22, of Haiti, who helped unhinge the U.S. defense in a 1-1 tie March 13.
