Wow. Walker is one example of how MLS teams can grow talent without youth squads. From what I hear Walker was pretty bad when he showed up for preseason training last year.

Mark Lisi
LINEUP SHUFFLE
It's just three games into the season and MetroStars coach Bob Bradley is still tinkering with the lineup, but it was a little bit of a surprise to see midfielder Mark Lisi on the bench at the start of Sunday's match against the Revolution at Giants Stadium.
Lisi ranked second in the league with 11 assists last season and assisted on three goals in the first two games this year.
"I was a little bit surprised," said Lisi, who came on as a sub in the 67th minute. "But at the same time, whoever (Bradley) puts out there I know is going to do a good job. I just have to make the most of it."
Bradley said after the match that competition for starting spots has never been better.
"From preseason on this year we felt like we have more good players, and when we go into games on different days we will use different players," Bradley said. "When you show up for the game, some days you will be called on as a starter and some days as a reserve."
Lisi seems ready for the challenge.
"We have a group of guys here that can all play," he said. "When you've got 20 (or so) guys who can start, it's a tough decision. Coaches enjoy having those type of choices. He makes the decisions and we all get on with it. I'm still staying positive and I'll continue to work and try and do things well."
The MetroStars, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, will hold an overnight, 7v7 soccer tournament June 18-19 at Giants Stadium. The 32-team field is open to adult teams with players 18 and older. For more information or to register, call 1-8884METROTIX.

Metrostars vs Boavista in Elizabeth, NJ
Metros to play Boavista in Elizabeth
May 3, 2004 (MetroStars.com Press Release)
The MetroStars announced today that the team will play a friendly match against Boavista F.C. of the Portuguese Super League as the kickoff to the 25th Annual Portugal Day Festival. The game will be played on May 26th at Williams Field in Elizabeth, N.J. at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Newark Festival and game are being run by the Bernardino Coutinho Foundation.
"The MetroStars are delighted to be a part of the game which will kickoff the Portuguese Festival in the Ironbound," said MetroStars President and General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. "This match serves the dual purpose of both giving our team a friendly match against a well known Portuguese first division opponent, and also bringing the team into the community that supports it. This is a great opportunity for our organization all the way around."
The Newark Festival, widely regarded as the largest ethnic festival in the state and largest Portuguese feast of its kind in the world will run from May 26th until June 13th with a variety of programs highlighting all aspects of Portuguese culture. Attendance this year is expected to top one million people for all events combined.
Boavista F.C. currently has 44 points in league play, which puts them in a tie for eighth place with one match remaining on May 9 against Marítimo. Currently their roster includes Ricardo Sousa and Frechaut, who are both members of the Portuguese National Team player pool. Sousa is also currently tied as the fourth leading goal scorer in the league.

LISI'S BACK
He says it didn't bother him but there was a small look of satisfaction on Mark Lisi's face following Saturday night's 1-1 tie with the Chicago Fire at Giants Stadium.
The MetroStars midfielder, a regular last season, started the first two games this season but was limited to a substitute roll in two of the past three games. He said all the right things, but it had to sting a bit.
Against the Fire, Lisi was one of the better players on the field. Moving into the attack more than at any time this season, he had three excellent chances to score in the second half.
His glancing header went just wide in the 58th minute, a 32-yard shot was tipped over the bar by Fire goalkeeper Henry Ring in the 64th and his 20-yarder in the 73rd just missed the upper right corner.
"It's the same mentality. I've done the same thing," Lisi said. "I haven't gotten down. I've stayed positive and just continued to work."
MetroStars coach Bob Bradley doesn't reveal the lineup until game day, so players on the bubble never know for sure.
"It keeps everybody focused and you just have to prepare," Lisi said. "You don't know if you're starting or not so you have to prepare the day before like you're going to start."

Thats a great story the kid can play no doubt about that but I know going to university and trying to play intramural soccer is hard enough. I give him credit for keeping a 3.8. Its good to see him not neglecting his work.
