SOCCER
MetroStars land Agoos
Friday, December 10, 2004
By IVES GALARCEP
HERALD NEWS
The MetroStars headed into this offseason needing a defensive boost and an infusion of leadership. They filled both needs in one fell swoop Thursday, landing one of the most accomplished and experienced defenders in Major League Soccer.
The Metros acquired U.S. national team veteran Jeff Agoos from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for a fourth-round selection in next month's MLS Draft. Team officials wouldn't comment on the deal but the Metros are expected to announce the trade today.
A nine-year veteran of the league and member of four MLS Cup championship teams, Agoos leaves San Jose after four seasons. He helped captain the Earthquakes to a pair of MLS Cup titles (2001, 2003), but his age and salary made him expendable.
In acquiring Agoos, the Metros are hoping to bolster a defense that allowed a league-high 47 goals while also providing leadership for one of the league's youngest teams. Agoos should also serve as strong cover for the likely absence of captain Eddie Pope, who is expected to miss matches in 2005 as the U.S. national team takes part in World Cup qualifying.
Agoos played 24 games for San Jose last season, registering a goal and four assists. He spent five seasons with D.C. United, helping the club to three MLS Cup titles (1996-1997, 1999), before beginning his four-year stint with San Jose. Agoos helped lead the Earthquakes to a title in 2001, earning MLS Defender of the Year honors that sesason.
A long-time fixture on the U.S. national team, Agoos earned 134 caps since last taking the field for the U.S. team in 2003. He started three games for the U.S. team in the 2002 World Cup during its run to the quarterfinals.
The acquisition of Agoos could leave the Metros with a starting back-line of Agoos and Jeff Parke in central defense, Pope at right back and Chris Leitch at left back. The team also expects to receive a greater contribution from Seth Stammler. A second-round pick in 2004, Stammler impressed in pre-season before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him for most of the 2004 season. The Metros have already lost defender Craig Ziadie, whose MLS contract expired and is currently attempting to secure a deal in either England or Scotland.
The trade leaves the Metros with just one pick, a fifth-round selection, in the MLS Draft. The team sent its first-round selection in 2005 to Chicago to complete the compensation package that allowed them to sign Bob Bradley as head coach.

NEWMAKER: Jeff Agoos
Jeff Agoos, 36, has been traded from the San Jose Earthquakes to the
MetroStars for a fourth-round pick in the 2005 MLS draft. Agoos, a 9-year
MLS veteran, has won three MLS titles with D.C. United and two with San
Jose.
The Texas product who played collegiate ball at the University of Virginia,
where he celebrated the 1989 national title, made 134 U.S. national team
appearances. He debuted for the United States in 1988, was a member of the
1998 World Cup team, played in the 2002 World Cup, and earned his last cap
in 2003.

Bradley likes Brazil
By MICHAEL LEWIS
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Clint Mathis is ditching Bundesliga and heading back to MLS.
MetroStars coach Bob Bradley recently returned from a 10-day trip to Brazil, scouring the soccer talent-laden country for affordable promising players.
Last year the Metros "discovered" Gilberto from the Ginasio Pinhalense de Esportes Atlético club and signed the 21-year-old midfielder as a developmental player.
"You don't know what will come of it until later on," Bradley recently said. "I saw games on many different levels. So we'll see if there are players there that we can look at."
There is so much talent in Brazil that many players who don't measure up to the high standards can fall through the cracks. Some 5,000 Brazilians play overseas, according to the Brazilian Football Confederation.
"When you talk about different levels, that includes some guys that would be on some lower teams that would probably be interested to leave," Bradley said, "players that would be similar situations to a guy like Gilberto a year ago. There are still guys that are young, playing on smaller teams, probably don't make that much money."
The Metros have but a handful of picks for the Jan.14 SuperDraft in Baltimore. They have the option of taking D.C. United's first-round choice in 2005 or 2006 as compensation for the Jaime Moreno trade. The Metros owe Dallas a first-round pick for acquiring Joselito Vaca.
A number of observers feel the draft's talent pool isn't as fruitful as in other years.
"I don't speculate like that," Bradley said. "I don't understand where people come away with this stuff. I think there's always a pretty solid group of players. It's always the case that maybe there is somebody there, as he steps to a higher level he will come forward and do well in the league. I think we've seen that every year. I think that the depth of talent in the country continues to grow."
CLINT COMING: Ex-Metro Clint Mathis is closer to returning to MLS as Hannover 96 confirmed on its Web site that he is leaving after an unsuccessful and sometimes controversial year in the German Bundesliga. MLS could announce his signing as early as next week, as sources said negotiations were still ongoing. The MLS winter transfer window opens today.
Mathis, 28, who joined Hannover on a free transfer, reportedly will be sold for $350,000 to MLS. He then will be allocated to Real Salt Lake, which has been coveting the unpredictable U.S. international. The clubs will have a working agreement that Hannover will play two friendlies in the U.S. before 2008 and that RSL will send youth clubs to Germany for training. RSL will pay Mathis the league maximum of $280,000, according to league sources.
TONY STAYS PUT: Citing family reasons, former U.S. women's national coach Tony DiCicco turned down an offer to coach the Chinese women's team. "I would be spreading my family all over the globe," said DiCicco, who added that he is talking to China about other possibilities "that are not as time consuming."

Youri Djorkaeff signed with the Metrostars
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"I always dreamed of living in New York. It's the choice of a way of life. If the New York solution had not happened, I would have stayed at home. I never had any desire to play for Qatar or St Gratien [a French third division club]."
-- New MetroStars signing Youri Djorkaeff, a World Cup champion with France in 1998 who turns 37 next month, on what drew him to MLS. (Reuters)
"Other coaches have gone back to jobs in the NFL and the NBA and in soccer all over the world. I'm interested. I feel I'm a better coach today than when I left."
-- Tony DiCicco, the U.S. women's national team coach in 1994-99, who guided it to the 1996 Olympic gold medal and 1999 Women's World Cup title, shows interest in replacing his successor, April Heinrichs, who recently resigned. (New York Times)
