Bad News for New England, could cost the season
3. NEWSMAKER: Matt Reis
A day before his team's MLS opener at San Jose, New England starting goalie Matt Reis said he was retiring to pursue a career in performance art and experimental music.
"I don't know, it was just time," said Reis. "I woke up on my 30th birthday earlier this week and I realized that soccer had been the focus of my life for so long. I have other interests, including performance art and experimental music, and this just looked like the opportunity of a lifetime."
Reis, 30, helped the Revs to the 2004 Eastern Conference final, stopping two penalty kicks in the second leg of their first-round series with regular-season conference champion Columbus.
The other Revs goalies, Doug Warren and Kyle Singer, have played a combined seven games.
