Cafu considers coaching role
Quote:
Marcos Cafu has confirmed he’ll end his career at San Paolo, suggesting this will be his last season with Milan.
“I have just one dream: to return to San Paolo as a player,” he told Brazilian newspaper ‘Globo Esporte.’ “When I moved to Europe, I left the door open for a comeback.”
As Cafu will be 36 years old at the end of the current campaign, it’s highly unlikely he will put this move off for another season.
The right-back left San Paolo after six years to join Spanish outfit Real Saragozza in 1994, but returned to Brazil soon after for Palmeiras.
His Serie A career took off with Roma in 1997 and he went on to win the Scudetto and 1994 and 2002 World Cups.
All set for a spell in Japan after his contract with the Giallorossi expired in the summer of 2003, Cafu was instead handed a revival at Milan, lifting another Serie A title.
News of his departure is a blow for the Rossoneri, who are also losing Jaap Stam at the end of this season, as the Dutchman has already revealed he’ll go back to Holland.
As Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta are in their late thirties, a revolution will be needed in Carlo Ancelotti’s defence.
Meanwhile, the indefatigable Cafu jokingly explained that he would gladly go back over his glittering career and change a few things.
“If I were to do it all again, I’d try to play as a striker. Someone like me has to push forward, come back to defend, go up the field again and put in a cross. If you make a mistake, the attacker moans and shouts at you. Yes, it’s definitely easier to be a hitman in football!”

Did he ever play in central midfield? He would be better there than he is at fullback.

They really will need a brand new back four though won't they? Stam was never a long term investment, nor was Cafu, as good as they've both been.

Well I think Nesta is good for 2 or 3 more years and Khaladze or Jankulovski are good enough at left back, so they need a new centre back and right back quickly.

Milan defender Marcos Cafu has announced that he might extend his contract with the Rossoneri. “Adriano Galliani said we can discuss a renewal.”
The Brazilian, who will turn 37 in June, is contracted to the San Siro outfit until the summer and stated in November that he had received an offer in Brazil, which he was considering carefully.
“Galliani gave me the good news, maybe I can extend my contract with Milan,” said Cafu.
“We will meet this week to discuss the details, in order to understand if we can reach an agreement,” added the former Roma star.
“I have been hearing people say that I am old for the past 10 years, but I have never given up.
“I believe I can still play for a long time, I have no intention of stopping. Now, chances are that I might stay here for another season rather than returning to Brazil,” concluded Il Pendolino.
Cafu, who arrived at Roma in 1997 from Palmeiras, joined Milan in 2003, playing 101 Serie A matches and 33 Champions League ties so far.
Milan are set to undergo a complete renovation process in their defensive department at the end of the current campaign, as veterans Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta seem likely to retire.

Is a contract extention really necessary though now that you have Oddo?

Let him go...Cafu can still play, but not at a level that Milan need him too. Maybe they will keep him and not play him as much. Like the did with Costacurta. Sit on the bench and play once a year.

I actually think he can play on, I just don't see the point of having him as well as Oddo who clearly should be the starter. I mean there are others like Simic and Bonera who can fill in.

As a RB I prefer Simic, Bonera is decent in the centre though.

Oddo should start but (unless we buy someone else) we need Cafu to give us depth. He's getting old, but if he can keep playing like he has lately, I'll be more than happy to keep him. In my opinion, he's a much better RB than Simic or Bonera.
About Bonera, he's excellent in the center but suffers greatly when played out of position. He really, really should not be played on the right. Brocchi can be played as RB in a pinch though, and isn't too bad at all.
Still, I want more than "just" Oddo for RB; Oddo should get rested sometimes and I don't want to have to play various people out of position should Oddo get injured.

Yeah I love Cafu, but I would like to see morer fresh legs in their. Oddo is a started no doubt but we need someone who can come in and play just as well of a game as Oddo while he rests.
I am not a huge fan of simic, but he is suitable for a reserve in RB, i don't like him in the centre. Where as Bonera plays really well in the centre. He does suffer from playing outside his natural position. Hence his not such a great start to the season.
But if someone nice and young comes in a would be happy! But after Cafu's game on Saturday who woudln't want in him in their squad. he is brilliant, and I do love him. But older legs do tier easily!
