Kaka named World Player of the Year!
Quote:
Kaka closes in on FIFA award Friday 30 November, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milan ace Kaka is on a three-man shortlist for FIFA’s World Player of the Year award.
The Brazilian star is set to receive the Ballon d’Or award on Sunday in Paris and now stands a strong chance of doubling his celebrations.
The other two men on the three-man list are Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Argentine marksman Lionel Messi.
While the Ballon d’Or winner is elected by journalists, Coaches and captains of the national teams of FIFA member countries vote for the World Player of the Year award.
Kaka is reportedly the favourite to clinch the prize at FIFA’s World Player Gala in Zurich on December 17.
The Brasilia native could cap a stellar year that has already seen him receive the FIFPro World Player of the Year honour in October after winning the highest percentage of the 45,000 votes from fellow players.

It should be a good battle between the three of them, all deserving of the award in their own right.

Kaka awaits world crown Monday 17 December, 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kaka is set to complete a stellar year by claiming today’s FIFA World Player of the Year award.
The Brazilian star was Milan’s hero once again in their Club World Cup Final win over Boca Juniors yesterday with a goal and an assist.
The Brasilia native has already clinched the Ballon d’Or and FIFPro World Player of the Year titles, largely for his efforts in helping the Rossoneri secure the Champions League last season.
The winner of the Ballon d’Or has also won the World Player of the Year for six of the past 10 years and reports suggest that Kaka will edge out Manchester United’ Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona striking star Lionel Messi.
Fabio Cannavaro was the recipient in 2006 and Kaka will become the ninth Serie A player to claim the honour if he is triumphant in Zurich later this afternoon.
Current Dutch national Coach Marco Van Basten and Liberian legend George Weah are the only two Milan players to have won the World Player of the Year to date in 1992 and 1995 respectively.

King Kaka and Marta crowned(FIFA.com) Monday 17 December 2007

Thank you. Your FIFA.com story has been successfully e-mailed to your friend(s).
2007's top players almost predictably both hail from the beautiful game's spiritual home of Brazil. Kaka topped the men's side while Marta scooped the award for the women.
Ac Milan's Kaka, who just days ago snapped up the Ballon d'Or as Europe's top player for 2007, was again the centre of attention on 17 December at the Zurich Opera House. The wide-smiling, elegant midfielder from Brasilia became the fifth Brazilian to be named FIFA World Player of the Year amid boisterous applause and all-around appreciation.
His exploits in helping Milan win both European and world titles played a big role in seeing the thoroughbred midfielder achieve the ultimate success on a night in which he beat out Lionel Messi of Argentina and Barcelona and fleet-footed Manchester United and Portugal trickster Cristiano Ronaldo.
On the women's side of things, sumptuous Umea striker Marta picked up her second player of the year title in succession. She helped drag an amazing Brazilian side to the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup in China in September and is fast emerging as the shining light of the female game.
Rampaging Marta, predictably overwhelmed by the honour, beat out Birgit Prinz of two-time world champions Germany and her own Brazilian team-mate Cristiane.
In the night's other commendations, Barcelona received the FIFA Fair Play award and 'O Rei' Pele picked up the FIFA Presidential Award.
